What does it take to become a moderator?

I seem to have a lot of extra time on my hands. I work in a job that allows me to browse the internet between calls and during if I care to. I am interested in being a moderator if they are in need of one. Do I have to pay for my account first? Do I have to be a member of this site for a certain period of time? Do I have to have a certain number of posts? If any of you moderators can let me know that would be great. I spend most of my time in the Cherokee and General forums since I have a Cherokee but ive been finding myself checking the other forums more and more lately. Thanks for your time.

I moderate a couple sites because I am good friends with the admin. Other than that, mods are usually appointed when the site is in need. That normally happens when an old moderator leaves, or the number of members increases.

Generally you need to be nominated by a moderator or the administrator.

...and based on the other sites I'm a moderator on, rule number one is "Don't ask to be a Moderator"...

if and when the current "staff" needs one, they'll discuss it behind closed doors and ask you privately...

time as a member and number of posts normally have nothing to do with it...

You also have to pass the Test of Strength and answer the Three True Questions.

Well nobody ever gets a job by waiting for someone to ask them to take it. In other words I dont just sit idly by and wait for someone to ask me. Gotta make it known that your interested first.

Maybe for jobs, but moderator and admin on a site is different normally. On all the sites I administer and moderate, I've never asked to do it, I was approached, and people who ask about it are highly unlikely to get it as majority of them end up abusing powers. We usually pick the person who's got the knowledge, knows how to deal with people and sometimes has the proven ability elsewhere.

Don't take it wrong, they're just messing with you! For the most part, they also look at the history of your posts, the amount of tech knowledge you have, and how even keeled you are in the various sections as a whole.

Contribute, participate, and enjoy the board, if a postion is needed then you may be suggested. No biggy, just let it ride.

I really do enjoy these boards otherwise I wouldnt be here. I spend my entire day at work on these boards and check them every morning when I wake up and right before I go to bed. I figured I have time and I can help. Ive been a moderator before but but those forums dont exist anymore.
