Well My Jeep Has Joined The "Fire Club"

As in it cought fire. The drivers side front tire locked up on me... I stopped and was able to free it up. Just literally got out my hammer and a screwdriver and jusr wailed. I heard it click and I drove a block and it was fine. Then since I was driving on the north side of the city in stop and go traffic I had to jump on them again and it totally locked up again. I got out and attmepted to do the same. I could not, but since I was late the for the Cubs game I said -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= I will deal with it later. So I drove a short wase with the damn thing locked up... till I heard the center cap fall off... or should i say melt off. I got off to a huge cloud of smoke and flames coughing out of the wheel well and wheel relief cuts. I grabbed my fire extiguisher off the cage but all the brake pieces had melted as well as part of the plastic body molding. I put her out and sat for a moment. Once it had all cooled down i looked at the damage. With one finger i pocked the disc and it crumbled as well as various other pieces falling to the pavement. But a quiock inspection showed that the axel wheel and suspension were all fine, so i decide I would drive the even shorter distance to my buddies place. That was an experiance. lol

I had all the brakes done as well as the exhoust I have been putting off. Cost me more then I wanted to spend and normally I would do it myself but I had no tools and no time. But the Jeep is superior shape now. So in the end it was good. Now I need to get the new top and such on since I replaced the rear main a week ago. heehee

It freaked me out to see the flames to say the least. lol

John

Funky... same thing happened to my front left caliper last Friday! It didn't light on fire, but it was billowing enough smoke to be seen at highway speeds. Waited two hours for a two truck that never showed up, then I just drove home since it cooled enough. In the end, $1,200 for the brake system to be serviced.

Everything brake related was thrashed. I drove her for to my buddies place with no brakes on that wheel. Very intresting drive. It only cost me about $550 for all four wheels to be done as well as the hardware on both sides in front. And then another $260 for a complete exhaust stem from the manifold back... cats, pipes and muffler! And this was in Lincoln Park! I was surprised at how cheap it was... normally I would do it all myself but I had no tools and no time.

Anyway very freaky to see the flames licking your fender...

She is driving great today!

That happened to my 91 XJ too... I was just starting a long highway trip and the right front caliper clamped shut and seized in position. The day before, it was fine. Anyway, I just pried the caliper open and clamped the brake line with a pair of vice-grips to get the thing home. Good thing brake parts are dirt cheap for these trucks!

Welcome aboard!! You have to watch out because once they catch fire they do it again.

I bought my jeep from a guy that had bought it new drove it 1 1/2 years than it caught fire (engine) than parked it for TEN YEARS!!! I saw an ad in the paper for all these parts and turned out it was the entire jeep minus the hard top. I bought it for $1600 and fixed it up. About a year later I was fourwheeling in Silverton, CO when it caught fire again! No major damage this time just melted some wires and the aircleaner but talk about a chinese fire drill

My buddy bought a "fire jeep" and about 2 years later it had another fire! Burned the paint off the hood and melted the wires.

Good luck but watch out!
