It's just another wonderful gift from NASA...it was the 40th attempt at a Water Displacement chemical (hence the WD-40) I love discovery channel.
I think it cost $9 million to create so there needs to be 2000 uses, otherwise the government would have wasted money. Plus it smells good. |

Honestly, I use it for only a few things...like my bathroom door hinges started squeaking last week. But the more I look at that list(200 things) the more I think it's good for some of them. Yes, when it comes to things for vehicle (i.e. outdoor) lubricants, there are better products.
One thing I used to do with it that I just thought of was pretty amazing. It was a friend of mine's trick. I started off working masonry construction and every time I worked with concrete, my really expensive trowels would get rusty edges after I rinsed them. Spray them down with WD-40 after cleaning and they don't rust...nice trick with tools. |

As another person said, And i use it as well for that, Spray the underside of jeep with wd-40 or mudd-off, Makes it alot easier at the car wash.
WD-40 is not a lubricant, But it does a good job when i soak my motorcycle chain in it, Will clean sand, dirt, moisture, etc out of it, Then i use justice bros. no-fling chain lube. I spray it on parts that are bare steel till i have time to finish the project, Keeps the water and rust away great. Other than that, There are many many more products out there i like more that hands down makes WD-40 an option i wouldent consider. But i always carry a can for water under the distributor cap.

WD40 can do lots of things except for it's intended job. It sucks as a lubricant. PB Blaster is much better in that role. I always keep WD40 around the house for those "other" jobs.

It was developed in 1953 for the aerospace, long before NASA was created in 1958. The Atlas Missile mentioned in the article was the first successful ICBM and then converted to use as satellite launch platform. I don't see anything about the government/military funding the R&D of WD-40 so unless you can cite a resource that details this funding there is no reason not to think that the founder/inventor funded the R&D on his own. Plus, even if the gov. did finance some of the development cost, I'm sure the annual taxes collected have paid back the gov many times over. BTW, this is not a discussion for the technical forum. I'm willing to bet that one of the moderators will be moving this thread to the GD section in the near future.

Kinda funny we uses it to break bolts and nuts loose. Works just as good as PB blaster. And yes we have them both. Just never bought anymore PB blaster. In school they also taught us to use it as a start aid, because it doesn't' dry out the cylinders like Ether.
