VIN questions DJ-5B postal jeep

I recently bought what I believe is a DJ-5B. Bought with bill of sale as the VIN sticker on the dash is no longer ledgible.

Did they put the VIN anywhere else in '71?

Also, there is a metal tag attached to three middle of the dash that says it's a '71 model, but the tag is dated October 1973. Was this added later or was the model the same for several years and this is just telling me the production date?

This was made into a hunting rig by the previous owner to look like an old Army Jeep. I'd prefer to find a VIN so I can get antique plates and gradually restore. Any help is appreciated.

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) 1971-1986 Jeep CJ

1971 to 1986 Jeep CJ VIN numbers are usually located in several possible locations. You should find a tin plate on the drivers side firewall near the brake master cylinder. You may also find one on the drivers side dash or the inside body panel by the floor near the parking brake lever. On mid 80's models it should also appear on the windshield wiper motor cover inside the Jeep. An abbreviated version is usually found on the top of the passenger side frame rail above the rear wheel.

You have a DJ-5B. The date stamped on the metal plate is the warranty expiration date. The only place I have seen the vin number is on a black and yellow sticker on the far right side of the dash (for RHD). The vin would be 8511-######. There is a stamping on the distributor side of the engine block that will give you engine production date. I own a 1972 DJ-5B that I have had since March 1981. I would be glad to help you with any other info.

I'm sorry, I am not familiar with the older Jeeps.

I bought a DJ-5 at a charity auction, and the VIN didn't show up in my state's database. I had to go to the DMV where they got a pencil tracing of the VIN, which I believe was on the firewall (it is on my 76 CJ-7.)
