If you go reserve for you will usually have a job that is available at what ever unit is within about 75 miles. This isn't always the case but if you want a force recon position and the closest opening is 200 miles away it doesn't make much since to drive 200 miles for one weekend a month.

There are no 11Bs in Reserve units. Army Reserves do not have infantry, Gaurd does. But I will recommend checking into other branches.

As a active duty grunt I will say that reservists do get s#$% on a lot but we hate everyone equal (cept for docs), btw my best friend is a POG reservist but hey to each their own.
In all seriousness I have seen reservists deploy more frequently than AD but good luck OH and you dont join the Corps for a job its a lifestyle, it takes complete commitment. Not to say you cant do it but my reservist friend has been active for the past two years. This gunclub aint for everyone but good luck

Speaking of which..... Allright Everyone, repeat after me, "Needs of the service come first." True story. During Desert Storm the Army realized we were extremely short of 88Mike's (HET - heavy equipment transporter) drivers. So we stood up a couple of National Guard infantry battalions, stripped out the 11B's and sent them to a 2 week driver training course - then deployed them as individual replacements to regular Army transportation units in the TO. |

Go to the recruiters office and ask for the OSOs (Officer selection officer) card. Then give him a call.
Ive been an active duty Marine for 16 years. In that time I was both a recruiter and on I&I Duty (Inspector and instructor duty. All reserve units have Active duty permenently stationed with them to run the unit the other 29 days of the month.) I am also currently in Iraq. Some things that you should know. - Reservists are not like Active duty when it comes to job placement. They join for a specific job, at a specific unit to fill a specific line number. (In a nut shell, you pick exactly where you will go and what you will do there.) The OSO will explain this better for your specific situation. - The Marines are in need of Reserve officers. There is even a bonus for joining. - You will spend at least a year on active duty just in training. Officer Candidates school is ~12 weeks, THe Basic School is 6 months, and THEN you go to your MOS training school. Add in some leave, and you could easily be in training for 18 months. Are you ready to set your civ career aside for that long? - Due to the nature of the reserves, it is quite possible to join a Recon unit as an officer since they are in need. If you fail the training at any point, you would be recycled into "Whatever they need you to do." You wouldnt be released from your contract. 18months + of training isnt cheap..they will get their use from you. - You will go to Iraq. Or Afghanistan. Probably both. - As a reservist, you are protected under Title 10. Your civillian job cannot fire you based on your military service, reguardless of duration. They can, however, replace you while youre gone. They just need to place you in a position of equal pay and status when you return. - Reserves vrs Active Duty. After several deployments and dealing with many reservists, all I can say is, stupid people will always be stupid. After a couple weeks on deployment, you cant tell the difference between active duty and reservists. Sure, they may not know as much, but they either catch on quick or get brushed off. Most units today are augmented by reserves anyway. - Join to be a Marine. If you do, and remember that, you will be much happier with your decision. Guys who join to do specific things are usually disappointed. You never know where it will take you. - The new GI Bill is awesome. You need a certain number of months on Active duty to rate it and pass it on to family. Being an officer will get you atleast 12 months and the 2-3 deployments that you will hit while in will EASILY cover the rest. If you want more information or have questions, shoot me a PM. Ill be back in a week. S/F Gunny |
