That's plain crazy.

I wonder how many times they broke something or smacked their face against a wall.

It's called "Free Running" or "Parkour". My friends and I (all teenage martial artists) used to do it in high school but we didn't know it had a name then (70's). I imagine I would break something now! Wait, now that I think of it, I broke stuff then. Ahhh to be young again.

How do you learn to do that without maiming yourself?

We just started out with small obstacles and small stunts often spotting each other 'till we became proficient. I think one of the most important concepts I learned was not to drop straight down from an obstacle if possible (dislocated an ankle) but always have some forward motion on impact allowing you to run or tumble out. Try it, just go to a picnic table and jump off landing flat, then do it again while jumping out (forward) and run or tumble out of it. You'll see, there seems to be much less impact with the forward motion. Think of throwing a stone along the surface of water (skipping). The forward energy and angle keep it from sinking on contact. Now take a stone and just drop it straight down into the water and it sinks immediately (all force going into water).

We would look at a situation and ask ourselves, what would be the hardest way to get from point A to point B.

We never did roof tops!

It helps to have a great strength to weight ratio.

BTW, you will get injured at some point (or several points).

Looks like they could have been some candidates for the Navy Seals or Special Forces (if they we American!). That's crazy. Do you know how hard it is to do a handstand on an escalator???

Anyone see the Top Gear episode where they raced some 'parkours against some small urban designed car? The parkours would have probably lost, but you know top gear and there humor...

Anyways, there is about 5 minutes of some great free running in that episode.

penalty for failure is pretty rough for that sport.

I cant wait for a parkour chase scene in a movie.

I love watching idiots hurt themselves. They should make this a spectator sport.
