A True Story of Survival

The following is a true story. I left this "comment" on my online service request form at sears.com. I await their reply...

Let me tell you a little story. It's Taco Tuesday, 11/25/08, in our house and my wife, my 15 mo. old daughter, and I are all in the kitchen preparing our tasty Tuesday tacos. Suddenly, much like a claymore mine, the glass on our 5 year old Kenmore range literally exploded. My first reaction was to take cover as I thought we had come under enemy fire by the sheer force with which the glass shrapnel was propelled within the domestic kill zone. "I'm hit" my wife cried out as she fell to the cold, hard tile floor. I instinctively scooped up our infant daughter and dove for cover behind the love seat in our living room wondering, as I slid across the laminate wood, "Who could be behind such a brazen attack?". Once the adrenaline cleared from my blood and I was able to asses the situation it became clear that, while shaken, by some miracle we had been spared any serious injuries. Aside from some flesh wounds to my wife's legs and the total destruction of our sense of security in our own home we were all, thankfully, OK. In the aftermath I noticed that the glass has actually blown out more than 3 meters in a 170 degree swath of utter annihilation.

How could this have happened?

Is this a regular occurrence with your product?

Under normal circumstances this would be a mere inconvenience maybe even something that one day we could look back and laugh about.

"Remember when we were almost killed in our kitchen by what we thought was a harmless appliance, only there to make our lives easier. Ha Ha."

Alas, this story only gets better as it is 11/25, 2 days before Thanksgiving and 7 days before my house, which has been sold, is to close escrow. Mind you, the buyers are expecting to have a complete oven door with all of the glass intact before they take possession.

I fully expect this to be a huge headache, and that there is likely no way that I will be able to deliver the oven/house as it was when it was purchased only a little less than 45 days ago. However, I write this in hopes that, at least, we can get the ball rolling on getting this resolved in a timely manner. Please feel free to call at your soonest convenience. 11/25, I will never forget...

Thank you,
***** ********
Has anybody ever experienced anything of this nature? Will I need to replace the entire range or will parts be available? Will it be done by next tuesday?

Wow. Tempered glass, I expect.

The only thing even remotely similar that I can recall was a Dodge Caravan rear window shattered from no apparent cause while it was parked in my yard.

Yup, this happened to our glass cook top 'bout 10-12 years ago. IIRC, it was a magic chef brand. We were in the living room and heard a loud "BANG". Like an explosion of sorts. Went into the kitchen and the entire cook top was shattered like a car windshield that had been in a wreck. I was'nt even turned on or hot. It just blew up. Very freaky!
