So I am getting a jeep that is going to have to be towed
it is an old xj on 39s
I have an 07 tundra with a v6
would that truck be able to handle the jeep and trailer?
I have read up and it looks like it can it will just be underpowered
what do you all think?
Thanks!

I think you'll be surprised on how decent it'll do. Don't expect to be able to hit 65 mph and stay there. But a short distance should be fine.
Keep an eye on the temp gauge and the transmission temp.

Did you wind up with the Rover? The disco will tow it, no problem.
Speaking of that, what are you, rich? You're buying a rover or a jeep or a tundra or a new guitar every couple of days.

haha no I am not rich I am just good at spending money
the tundra is a work truck
and I sold my VW to get the disco
and I but stuff for cheap and sell them for more on ebay to help with my guitar buying habit
I didnt even think about using the disco to tow. Looks like I will do that.

I think the disco is rated to tow something like 7700. I have a 21 foot boat that I pull with mine, no problem.

I wouldn't even try towing that Jeep with a V6 Tundra. Or V6 anything. The Tundra isn't really as heavy as you'd like it. Neither is the Disco. The Disco is way too short wheelbase. The towing rating on a vehicle doesn't say much about it. It's not just the engine, it's vehicle weight and wheelbase length too. I would use nothing less than a full-size truck. 3/4 ton would be best and a V8 at the least. If it's just going to tow it once or twice, you can go for it. Don't expect it to tow that well. The Disco isn't going to be nearly as stable either

Are you using it to tow frequently or just this once?

The Disco isn't the best for a tow vehicle. It's not all that heavy and the wheelbase is pretty short. If you're only towing short distances you might be fine. You can see how it goes the first time you tow with it. I know that a couple guys use their BMW X5s to tow their racers to the track. Some people were surprised, but those were 2350 lb E30s

The disco weighs 4500. It is incredibly stable when towing. I've pulled my boat the length of Califorina at 65mph with no issues. Yes, that's lighter than an XJ on a trailer, but it's longer. You appear to be talking out of your underpants. Have you towed much with a Discovery?

4500 isn't all that heavy. And the Disco has a short wheelbase for a tow rig.
On a tow vehicle, heavier + longer wheelbase = better. That's why when you go to the track and watch people pull up with their trailers they have full-size trucks, usually 3/4 ton or more. I haven't towed with a Discovery, but I have towed with a Commander. And they're almost the same regarding weight and wheelbase. It's just not an ideal tow rig, it's rather short

Yeah well I will see how it is and I will trust the disco will do fine.
I would much rather use my own car than to buy a whole new truck

Obviously the Disco's not a full size 1 ton, but it's very capable in terms of towing. After using mine to tow quite a bit, I wouldn't hesitate to use it.
