% of time you spend off road

I was thinking today about all the people who say they spend 80% driving on road, 20% off road. or 60% on road, 40% off road. etc. etc. I found it to be kind of ironic when one actually examines that in a bit of deapth.

If you drive 100 miles a week. 80 miles would be on the road, 20 would be off road. Now, that would be pretty freaking sweet to offroad 20 miles a week.

In reality, most people drive on average (just a guess) anywhere from 300-500 miles a week. that would mean you'd spend spend 80 miles a week wheelin' if you spent 20% of your time offroad!

Let's look at it in time perspective now.

You're back to driving 100 miles a week. we'll say half that time is city driving at 35mph and half is freeway at 70mph.

1 hour at 35mph and 20 minutes at 70mph. so 20% of 1hr 20min would be only 16 minutes of offroad time a week

In real life perspective (400 miles a week) 102.72 minutes of offroading a week, or a little over 1 and a half hours.

I'm not really sure where I'm going with this except to say that most of our percentage offroad is spent fairly accurately (a little bit low for me) based on time spent as a percentage, and extremely high based on mileage as a percentage.

So next time someone asks you how much you offroad, say it's 40% of your total miles. They'll really be impressed

You forgot that only applies to daily drivers. My jeep gets driven to the trail and that is the extent of off-road use.

I live up 3 miles of dirt logging road...I've had to use 4WD to get to and from the house since about November when it started snowing. When I get to pavement it's 6 more miles to work. Just driving to and from work for a 5 day work week, I drive 90 miles, 30 of which are 'off road'. That's 33%! Not bad! But I doubt too many people are in my situation. I was able to convince my wife that the BFG MT's were a necessity!

Every day on my way to work I cut a corner just to get a bit of dirt on my tires. That counts right? I think its 2 or 3 feet in my 15 mile drive.

Are we going by miles offroad, or time off road?
I can spend 8 hours offroad, and only drive 8-10 miles.

How about this. I go wheeling about once a month for about 2.5hrs. The rest of the time I am putting a little over 1000miles a month on my YJ. So say about 20 hours of road time if you divide 1000/50 = 20. 20/2.5 = 8. About 8%. I could be off though, by just a tad. Ok, I'm a moron, but nice theory dude. Later <><

I've been wheelin' alot since about mid-december, I'd say an average of 3.5 hrs a week, and I mostly just drive 5 minutes to school and back, so I must have a pretty good wheeling percentage....don't ask me to do the math
