Thinking of moving to the Carolinas

I was thinking of thinking generally North Carolina specifically the Charlotte area. But I am open to S.C. as well.

I grew up on Brooklyn and Jersey shore and now live in Ca. I worked all over the eastern coast as merchant marine so I am familiar with the climate and culture I also lived in Columbia S.C. for a few months in 99

I would like to buy a nice sized piece of property, nothing less than 3 acres and more along the lines of 10+. I am a chemist by education so I assume I would need to be relativly close to a major city.

Any thoughts? What do you think about the Carolinas? What attraks me is they are southern states generally against federal government encroachment, that are not land locked(I love the Atlantic). They have low crime and low immigration.

I just can not take the left coast anymore.

I was there in January with the family. I was ready to buy a house but the wife chickened out. Her family wants to say on this sinking ship of a state.

I was there a couple years ago visiting (meeting) my cousins, and almost didn't go back home. I ended up talking to a real estate agent about a brand new, gorgeous, 3 story townhouse for a sickeningly low price. Looking back on it, I probably should have done it.

Prices are down from 3 years ago. You might be upside down. Maybe it was good to wait.

How far down could they have really gone? The townhouse I was looking at was near the University, and was $110k. If I can go up there and get the same thing for less than that now, I just might do it.

Sorry for the wait, business walked in the door.

1) Wheelings good, we've got Tellico, Brown Mountain, The farm, & Uwharrie.

2) NC, I'm partial

3) Can't speak for the biotech joint, I spend my days & nights knee deep in crazy folk.

4) Teachers in NC walk on water & are overpaid by the governor.

5 CMC Randolph in Charlotte is top notch, I deal with them regularly, Presbyterian isn't soo hot.

Tech and Medicine in the Research Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) is spectacular. Tellico would be a ways away, but there are still places. The Raleigh subs are nice. Quick to the city, live in the country.

Your wife could work at any number of medical facilities, including Duke Medical, which is reguarly considered some of the best in the US.

Most folks are educated and housing isn't too crazy yet...by CA Standards, it's dirt cheap.

I grew up about an hour from Raleigh and went to school in Charlotte. I still have a house in Charlotte that I rent, and I don't want to go back.
