Thinking About Moving (in a few years)

Just wanted to get some personal experiences with picking up and moving, and I don't mean while in the military cause I've already done that.

I've lived my whole life in Michigan now reside 35 miles from where I was raised. I've spent time in Denver, CO and Valdosta, GA while in the Air Force. I absolutely loved Colorado and have always said that it was one place I would move to for permanant residency. I've got a family with 2 young children and the whole idea of moving is pretty scary. I think maybe I just need to vacation more and just visit these places instead of moving. I'll vest in my retirement in 4 years, so after that I'd be willing to make a change cause I don't know if I can handle staying in my present job much beyond that. But the thought about uprooting the family (mostly concerened about the impact on the kids) concerns me.

So let me hear your thoughts and words of wisdom.

This is coming from a kid that's been moved around cause of my dad's work...

Do it. At that age, they'll be sad, but it won't be devastating, not to mention, it's always nice to mention that i've lived places other than boring des moines IA (born mississippi, then to minnesota, then to Atlanta, then here... not a ton, but i'm only 17) As long as your kids are even mildly social, they can make new friends real easily, especially at that age....

Not to mention, IT'S COLORADO, do it! Make sure you don't just spring it on them though, they may be young, but they'll have an opinion on it too...

Ditto on the move-while-young thing. Where the kids spend their teen years is where they will consider home. I moved around England as a child, came to the Middle East at age 12 with my family, and kinda consider the Middle East to be more home than England. The kids may be a bit home sick if you move them while young, but give it 6-months to a year and they'll probably forget much of what they left behind.

I've heard that San Diego has beautiful weather, but I need to live somewhere where there's not a whole lot of people. Unless they all have Jeeps and are crazy about wheelin'!! Hey maybe we can start our own country!! Wyoming has something like less than 5 people per square mile, so that would work. I also am partial to the mountains. They're awesome!

Yeah I dont know about 5 people per square mile, and your right there isnt alot of mountains over here. But it really isnt crowded, I mean thats what I like about it, when I go up to Los Angeles THAT place is crowded, I dunno theres something about that places that as soon as I get there I want to leave, is just so hostile. In San Diego the wether is great, I've been going for about 110 days with my top down because it hasnt rained, its always about in the 70s over here. Not to mention everything is around San Diego, the Zoo, Seaworld, Disneyland etc. As far as for Jeepers, over here there is a huge club called San Diego 4 wheelers made of mostly just Jeeps and theyre always planning trips, heres the site so you can look them up http://www.sd4wheel.com/ I have seen alot of people that actually choose San Diego as there retirement spot, they mostly live by the beach. If you can afford living over here, thats the only down side over here, housing even in the ghetto areas are reaching up past 500,000 dollars. Most places are like a 1,000,000 for a house now. You just have to know how to play your cards right thats all. And I mean I know you care alot about your kids, think about your kids, theyre gonna love!! San Diego. Right now since theyre kids you can take them to legoland, the zoo etc, and once they become teenagers theyre gonna love them, I dunno if you have guys or girls but over here there so many hotties, I can almost guarantee you that you will be a grandaddy by the time theyre 17!! Specially if you send them to college to SDSU!! LOL J/k

to Wyoming and Montana. They're both beautiful states. Parts of Wyoming are getting expensive, though. The average cost of a 2000 sq. ft. home in Jackson is around $420,000.

As far as moving, my parents uprooted me when I was 14. We moved from Boise to Seattle. I thought it was the most horrible thing that they could ever do to me. After a few months, it was fine. We're all back in Idaho now but Seattle is my second home. Kids can adapt.

Yea I grew up just outside of Seattle. Even though I haven't been there in over 10 years I still think of it as home....

Oh, where did you grow up? I love the area. I'm close enough that it's easy to go for a weekend. My parents keep an apartment downtown because my dad has an office there. I miss the summers there but I don't miss all of the people and the traffic.

I grew up out by Maple Valley. It was very nice out there years ago, my brother says it's grown a lot since I was last there.

We use to goto Boise every summer to visit our Grandpa. I remember it being very hot there and hitting a local public pool. This was back in the 80's.

How old are the kids? We always talk about the move with the kids.. Mine are 8 and 7 and are EXCITED about moving, they ask me atleast twice a week when are we moving.. They have friends here but they are good at making new ones... I'm not looking forward to the one place for years.. though we are starting to talk about it now.
