Thinkin about getting this knife.
I want a good lockblade to carry in my pocket instead of my bulky multi tool and heard gerber makes good stuff. What do you guys think of this? Any experience with gerbers?
Thanks http://www.gerber-tools.com/Gerber-Torch-II-Tanto-22-01586.htm ![]()

Correct me if im wrong, but most if not all gerbers are made overseas. The quality is pretty garbage.
I carry a Benchmade Griptillian, Ken Onion Kershaw (spring assist), and an SOG Trident (Spring Assist) although made state side the SOG plastic handle and construction makes it feel cheap. I'd stick to Kershaw and Benchmade, a good knife is a major investment but you'll be glad you made it. I've had knives for years now.

I got the kershaw. It looks just like this but it's got the spring action opening. Hands down best knife. I got it at wal-mart for $50 (give or take a few). Take a look at the Kershaw, I promise youll be surprised. I've owned quite a few Gerbers, and I have nothing bad to say about them at all, but the Kershaw is a step above in my opinion!!!

I would suggest the axis lock from benchmade (even though I love my Kershaw) just based on the ease of use and disasembly. If your going to have just one knife and want it to feel the same years down the road as it did the first day you got it, the benchmade tool kit (or an eye glass repair kit) teflon lube, and a cloth and in 30 minutes a 1-2-3-4 years (list goes on) knife will feel like new.

Benchmade axis lock then, although not assisted, any rotation of the wrist in pretty much any angle with the right force (technique) will get that blade ready to go, plus you can put it away with one hand and technique as well. Online i've seen the Griptilian and other models go for as cheap as 70 and those are made with love in the US of A

trust me on the kershaw... ive never had a knife this sharp. the thing cuts through anything, plus all you gotta do is put a little pressure on the thumb and the blade pops right open. I think this is the coolest folder hands down, and I've owned tons of knives. I've got 6 or 7 (maybe more) right now.

Gerber overseas? Yeah - the newer ones. So is everything else, really.
All three of my Applegate/Fairbairn folders (one in each size) and my wife's Gerber LTR were all made here - I'd not have bought them otherwise. My 600DET was also made here - but it was issued to me back around 1992. My Benchmade/Emerson CQC7B(LH) was also made here, and I found that one by accident (I'd only seen right-handed versions before. I'm a southpaw - I don't mind reversing a clip, but this was a native left-handed liner-lock. And I have always been fond of Ernie Emerson's designs.) If you want to find a US-made blade, be ready to spend a few bucks. Everyone wants the "China Price" on everything (I blame Sam Walton's kids. When Sam Walton was still running Wal-Mart, he was on a "Buy America" kick and most of his stuff was domestic. Not so much now...) That's not to say that you can't find a good US-made folder, you're just going to have to look a little more. I haven't had to buy a useful knife in several years, so I can't tell you how much harder you'll have to look - but I know it's more difficult than it used to be. However, it's a bit easier if you stick to blades with "Name Designers" to them - Ernie Emerson, Ken Onion, and the like leap readily to mind. The principal difference between my Benchmade and an Emerson original, for instance, is that the Emerson blade is made from wrought stock while the Benchmade is made from powder metallurgy (and is still a tough blade. Sintering has come a long way!) But yes, it's a bit tougher to find a decent American blade anymore. I won't object to Japanese blades (they understand blades like we understand firearms) or German blades (they taught us a good deal about metallurgy,) but that's about it. English steel, maybe. Spain does nice swords, but I'd think those are more ceremonial than really useful (the blades from Cadiz or Toledo are very nice and well-detailed, I'll admit.)

Just speaking from personal experience.
I went to the "national museum of cutlery" or knife or something another. It's in Tennessee or NC or somewhere in the south. apparently the only all american companies are Bear and Sons, Case, and Queen. I bought a Case 2x and it's a fine knife. I'd buy one again for sure. Although I won't have to. It'll last a lifetime if you take care of it. Last edited by KrawlingT; 06-28-2009 at 05:43 AM.. |
