This summer im looking forward to lifting my jeep and taking it down south for a week or two, possibly some beach. Any state staring from Virginia down to Florida, I was wondering if anyone knew of any beaches where you can jeep, or even camp out on???

The Outer Banks in North Caroline have a beach where you can drive on, on the very north end of the Outer Banks. I'm not sure about their rules for overnight camping, but I know I've seen 4x4's out there at night. And as far as I know, you don't need a permit to go out there, but I'm not sure if that has changed since 2003.

I went to the outer banks in June 04 and didn't have a problem getting out there. Don't know about camping out on the beach though. I'd call their tourism #'s and ask.

The only thing I will say about the OBX, is that that beach gets packed in the summer, and if you're looking to "wheel" alot, then you probably won't find this great terrain. The beach is pretty easy, nothing more than 4HI is necessary unless you go near the water. Alot of families go out onto that beach in their SUVs to drive a mile or two and then go back off the beach, so if you decide to spend the day on it you'll probably spend more time looking out that someone isn't driving like an idiot (I've seen it first-hand on that beach) and almost run you over. Also, young drivers who take mommy and daddy's SUVs out there and don't know what respectful wheelin' is all about may mess up your day. Otherwise it is a pretty beach, you may see some wild horses, and it's definately nice to cruise on.

BTW, what is proper beach driving etiquette? When we went a couple years back, I wasn't sure how to deal with others who wanted to drive on my right side coming at me, and which way to veer if someone behind me wanted to fly around. I didn't want to put my jeep in the ocean trying to give way, or get it stuck in wet sand and need a tow. Any info guys and gals?

Don't want a crowded beach? Go to the south beaches of OBX. We have been to Avon and below on 4th of July weekend and have 1/4 to 1/2 mile between trucks. Driving on the beach is like driving on the road. Road rules apply. Watch out for the rangers they do give tickets. If some fool wants to go faster then you they should pass you on the left, you do not have to give way.
Use to you could put a fishing pole in the water and you could stay all night(sleep on the beach). Now someone must be actively fishing(awake) to stay on the beach. You can have fires on the beach just keep them below the high tide line. hth |

![]() carolina beach, nc $10 day or $40/year you can drive on the beach (15 MPH speed limit), surf with no board leash, let your dog run around and dig huge holes, have as big of a bon fire as you want (as long as you are not burning pressure treated wood or any pallets due to the nails), drink as many kegs as you'd like, and stay as long as you want.... presuming your beach pass is valid.... their are portajohns on the sand and if you drive off the sand their is a shower house and bathroom facility aabout 500 feet from the entrance. -Erik <---- thinks you should stop at lots of beaches ![]()
