After replacing several worn out parts in the front end of my 96 ZJ I have determined that the worsening knocking sound is coming from the power steering gear. My question is: is this a part that is safe to get from a junk yard, or do I need to get one from the parts store? Also, is there anything else that needs to be replaced with it, such as the pitman arm? Thanks!
Steering box is often safe from junkyards because vehicles end up there for lots of other regions.... get the lowest mileage one you can. Always flush out power steering fluid by running the low pressure side into a 5 gallon bucket... don't worry about wasting a few quarts.. It's best to flush out the parts and pump by turning wheels left to right then back again 3-4 time with front wheels lifted ( frame on jackstands) to make turning easiest.
Can I re-use the pitman arm? I've seen discussions where people have replaced that as well, but I'd like to avoid it if I can
