something's fishy.

so.... the director of HR, who's a big fisherman (takes yearly trips to famous streams), just asked to go fishing with me, on a no-name local creek... it's not that the fishing is bad there, but that I have a pending re-classification of job duties (essentially a raise, for work I've been doing)...

That doesnt mean bad he could just be trying to get to know you. You actually have a good chance at getting him to like you. Just dont do anything stupid while fishing.

This is a good thing. I don't take any employees with me hunting or fishing unless I like them.

You're right... I know, we've fished before, I'm a flyfishing guide, so it's more likely he's using me to find out what flies are hatching, so he can show off to the new VP (who I also fish with). It just seemed sketchy being out-of-the-blue and at the same time as my pending raise.

Well could it be a situation that he might have to choose between you or another person? Sometimes bosses do that to put one of the employees over the edge. Either way just show him a good time and im sure youll have nothing to worry about.

who cares if there's a motive behind it! going fishing with him is going to be a better time than going to work with him.

YES!!! make SURE you know what the guy drinks and likes. even if youre not a beer guy, just be like "Oh, you like corona too, i love corona!' seriously, "surprising" them makes a world of difference, but once again, it is fishing so dont forget to keep those cans.

Don't worry. It may not be bad news. Maybe he just wants to have sex with you.

Yeah...he wants YOU to take HIM fishing. If Im going to deliver some bad news to an employee, Im not going to go out into the wilderness alone with him, especially when Im sure hell have a filet knife with him.

He may be going to tell you what a good raise you got.

Relax.

He's probably sizing you up. Is there an opening that goes with the raise, or is it just money involved? Just go and have a good time.
