so what would you guys do?

Soooo I posted this over in the TJ forum but i wanted to know what fellow Cherokee owners would do in the same situation... i've always wanted a nice Wrangler but I come from a lower middle class family and we dont have much money to spend so I pretty much get what i can with what money i make on my own. So on with the story... I'm just home from college and myself and one of my buddies are cruisen through town around 10:30 at night on a tuesday. As we are driving past this repair shop that also sells some cars we notcie this '97 TJ with an I6 4L engine, already lifted, American racing wheels, and Uniroyal Laredo M/T tires on it. MINT CONDITION So we stop and inspect it, looking it over and such. We open the hood to see the motor and i notice this little black box with a key emblem on it. So i slide it open and the key to the Jeep falls in my hand. WTF!! So we get in the Jeep start it up listen to the the engine and just look at eachother, like well what now??

sorry about the pictures it was dark and all i had was the camera on my cell phone.

So what would you do?? If you cant afford it and niether are your parents able to help you afford it. AND you Live in a redneck town and know a handful of people that if had this information they wouldnt think twice about taking it... not that I, myslef would actually take it

1)Steal it?
2)Take it for a hot lap and take it back...
3)Leave it and act like nothing happened. OR
4)leave a note on it saying they should remove the key before someone steals it.

Just to let you know... we put the key back and left like nothing had happened.

Grrrrrrrrr anyone got $8500 they can lend me lmao

The links wouln't show the pictures. My wife is an EMT so I know most of the local shields. As long as I brought it back....lol
You could just let your questionable acquaintances obtain the vehical for the fee of a lift kit and rims...

like i said... I wouldnt actually take it. It just messes with your head when you have that oppurtunity and you know you could get away with it but you know you cant do it.

The funniest part about this is that 2 weeks ago me and the same friend stopped to check out this really nice lifted XJ and the doors were unlocked so we got in to take a look. Just randomly I tried they ignition and the Jeep started without the key in it. Its like someone wants me to take it. lol

If you don't own, have no intention of buying it, can't afford it...don't touch it.

Speaking for all "JEEP" owners, as a "JEEP" owner myself , stop tempting yourself. And stop entertaining the thought of doing that to a one of our fellow jeep owners. And definately listen to the post above mine.

Another option is...
I've got a buddy who has bought two different XJs both of which were newer than mine for $500 bucks a piece. So they are out there, affordably.

so your telling me you've never seen something really nice and decided to stop and check it out even though you really have no intention in getting it?? I stop and look at cars all the time just to see whats been done to them and how cool they are. If its for sale with a sticker price on it no plates on it and the doors are unlocked there is no reason not to sit inside and check out the interior and the miles and so on....

and.... I OWN an XJ thats not the point. I'm a college student at the Art Institutes which is an all year round school. I have an appartment in Downtown Pittsburgh that i share with a couple guys and rent is $1180 a month. I dont get a summer break and i dont have much money. I would LOVE!!! to work on my Cherokee but i dont have time or $$$ to do it.

I'm just saying it would be REALLY nice to own something that i didnt have to coonstantly fix, something that already had a nice lift and tires on it. So all i had to do is maintain an already running vehical instead of trying to keep the vehical running.

you guys are making me sound like a bad guy just because i stopped to drool over a nice jeep. that happened to have a spare key on it that i accidently found.

You are an idiot, sorry. You are even dumber for talking about if you should steal something on a JEEP message board.

if I saw you sitting in my Jeep starting the engine I would probably show you the other end of my 12 guage.

i think the original post was intended to be funny. to people who have vehicles stolen or vandalized or anything like that, its is not funny. its one thing if i you know the person or you have permission. here is something funny - we put my buddys topless wranlger in neutral all the time and push it down the street so he cant find it, but thats a different story. even better when we boozin a bit. now that is humor.

bottom line you should have stayed out of it, you could have gotten in trouble with the owner and or the law.

Last time I checked, it's pretty hard to insure a stolen vehicle.

People that drive without insurance need to die a horrible painful death.

Yes i over stepped some boundries yes I could have gotten in trouble. I had no intention in stealing it and yes i know a cop wouldnt care what my intentions are. I knew what i was getting into, i just wanted to check the jeep out. I didnt know the key was there we accidently came upon it. I started the engine to hear it humble for 2 seconds and then i put it back and we left. Just some Harmless teenage fun.

The purpose of this post was to find those soles who would have done something opposite in the same situtation not to be scolded for something that i already new the risks of

Sorry, as objective as I'm trying to be when reading your story 'stupidity' was the first word that came to mind. What exactly are you trying to get out of posting this in a Cherokee tech forum? Someone to tell you to steal someones truck, or someone to tell you to save up and buy yourself one?

I mean they aren't THAT expensive, man. They're Jeeps. Get one for cheap and build it up over time. It's not exactly a rich mans ride.

if you decide to take it for a "joy ride" I think you should have to spend a few days in jail. What a dumb topic this is

....and last time I check this is a Technical forum, keep this crap out of here.

What would I do ?
Stay out of other peoples' vehicles even if they are unlocked ! Next time I would suggest going back during regular business hours if you are interested in a vehicle .
