SHTF/TEOTWAWKI-concious Jeepers here?
I'm trying to think of ways in which to prepare my Jeep for SHTF.
One instance that would greatly effect my Jeep would be an "EMP."
Wikipedia on EMP-
Quote:
The case of a nuclear electromagnetic pulse differs from other kinds of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) in being a complex electromagnetic multi-pulse. The complex multi-pulse is usually described in terms of three components, and these three components have been defined as such by the international standards commission called the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).[13]
The three components of nuclear EMP, as defined by the IEC, are called E1, E2 and E3.
The E1 pulse is the very fast component of nuclear EMP. The E1 component has an intense electric field that can quickly induce very high voltages in electrical conductors. E1 is the component that can destroy computers and communications equipment and is too fast for ordinary lightning protectors.
The E1 component is produced when gamma radiation from the nuclear detonation knocks electrons out of the atoms in the upper atmosphere. The electrons travel in a generally downward direction at relativistic speeds (more than 90 percent of the speed of light). This essentially produces a large pulse of electrical current vertically in the upper atmosphere over the entire affected area. This electrical current is acted upon by the Earth's magnetic field to produce a very large, but very brief, electromagnetic pulse over the affected area. [14]
The E2 component of the pulse has many similarities to the electromagnetic pulses produced by lightning. Because of the similarities to lightning-caused pulses and the widespread use of lightning protection technology, the E2 pulse is generally considered to be the easiest to protect against.
The E3 component of the pulse is a very slow pulse, lasting tens to hundreds of seconds, that is caused by the nuclear detonation heaving the Earth's magnetic field out of the way, followed by the restoration of the magnetic field to its natural place. The E3 component has similarities to a geomagnetic storm caused by a very severe solar flare.[15][16] Like a geomagnetic storm, E3 can produce geomagnetically induced currents in long electrical conductors, which can then damage components such as power line transformers.

So, we know with close certainty that if this sort of senario would play out (See: IRAN) then most of our beloved vehicles would instantly become huge paperweights.
So what to do to prevent this on our newer Jeep vehicles?
I subscribe to the use of a "Faraday Cage" to protect some of my electronic radio equipment. This can be as simple as a pelican case lined with sheets of aluminum foil, or as intrinsic as a safe-room lined with grounded wire mesh.
But what about our vehicles? Short of a "Faraday Garage" I'm not sure what would be done to protect them. So, I'm asking some of the electronic's gurus here to come up with some theory on what could be done to protect Chrysler electronics enough that the vehicle is functional in the event of EMP.
Any suggestions?

If the EMP from a nuclear blast is hitting you, you might as well just bend over and kiss your *** goodbye.

If you check out the wiki, the blast is most effective in space, where the radiation is not likely to effect you. In fact, you won't even know a blast occurred until your cell phone/power/etc goes down. While a thermonuclear explosion or even a dirty bomb set off in the sky or on the ground would produce EMP, it wouldn't be widespread like it would be in space.
This is mostly for fun, fellas. Although it is still something to think about.

So what, make sure the PCM/computer is wrapped up with conducting material, as well as body control module? Would the vehicle's wiring harness still just conduct the current into the computer anyway?

EMP only effects electronics that are powered on, correct?

The effects of an EMP have been largely exaggerated by the TEOTWAWKI crowd. The U.S. gevernment did a study ( http://www.empcommission.org/) on the subject and turns out that a modern vehicle will do just fine when detonation occurs far enough away to be survivable in the first place. (If your vehicle gets thrown into the air by the blast wave, I would claim that the effects or non-effects of an EMP are fairly irrelevant at that point. )

You mean a Faraday Cage like the sheet metal of a motor vehicle?

There are some discussions about it at our child-site at http://www.PreparedSociety.com .. come on over and see what has been chatted about already.

Considering all the electronic gas pumps we have would no longer work, you'd get about as far as however much gas is in your tank with all that work you're doing.
