Shafted by the University

So today I go in to my housing appointment today for the lottery process and to pick my housing for next year. This date was determined by a number of factors including my permanent address and my gpa. They informed my that they ran out of housing the day prior, two days before the end of the lottery. I now have nowhere to live.

My permanent address is in NH and I have no family down here anymore. They mentioned that cancellations happen throughout the summer, but there is no guarantee. I have applied to another university and still are waiting to hear back from them. I can not wait until summer to decide whether or not I am coming back.

edit: Wouldn't it make sense to guarantee housing to an out of state student seeing as I am paying 10k more a year than an instate student? I told them that unless I hear back in the next week or so, I will withdraw at the end of the semester. I wanted to add that the greedy university is ****ing stupid for accepting more students that wanted to house on campus than they had housing for but I figured that would not get me anywhere.

What, you can't find a place to live in the entire area? Plenty of places to live off campus. Lots of people do it. Give it a try.

hahahahha. im not laughing at you, well yes i am. of course it would make sense to guarantee you a place to live as an out of state-er. but then you realize you are at a fine American institution where nothing ever makes sense. shoot my school will only change the air filters ever 3 months when then clearly state to change every month on the filter.

you are at the point where you need to learn nothing a college can or will do can or will make sense to anybody that does not know reverse polish notation. good luck finding a place to live off campus!

Off-campus is cooler and much more affordable. I'd only stay on-campus if I were a freshman.

Are you sure you weren't shafted by your GPA?

Just because you're paying more doesn't mean the school is getting paid more. Public institutions get money from the state for in-state students. Your 10k is to make up the difference.

Of course they accept more students than they have housing for. Many claim they want student housing than decide they want to live off campus. Some decide to skip going to college all-together. Empty housing is a waste of money that would result in higher tuition and less amenities.

Remember, just because YOU don't understand something doesn't make it stupid.

Unless your a freshman or an RA there is no reason to live on campus. Go make some friends and get a place together.

Off campus is not an option due to my loan situation. The money goes to the school and the leftovers get sent back to the bank. Off campus housing is not run by the school, rather by a couple companies therefore I have no way to pay for the off campus house.

I am a freshman and my friends invited me to get a house with them. I ended up declining the invitation because of the bank.

because of the bank? Forgive me if I'm naive or missing something, but when I was a freshman (3 years ago I'm a senior now) it was MUCH more expensive to live in the dorms than it did to live in a house w/ friends. With living in any on campus system you basically have to buy a meal plan, which is a huge rip off. Also where do you go to school, I have friends all over VA, maybe I can tell them about your situation and see if they have any advice.

That's kinda a messed up situation. The way my federal loans work is that I can take out as much as my "estimated cost of attendance" and whatever is left after paying tuition goes directly to me. I ended up saving $7,000 a year by living off-campus.
