Save my CJ before it is too late
I need support in getting to love my Jeep again, here lately I've been getting really fed up with it, each day I like my 78 Bronco even more and am debating on selling the Jeep and building the Bronco. I just don't see the Jeep like I used to, ever since I got the Bronco I've noticed how my Jeep has just been a money pit, my Bronco runs flawlessly, I could hop in it and drive it to Florida right now if I wanted to. My Jeep seems to be in the shop every other weekend like it is now and I'm just sick of all the stupid little things it throws at me. I need help, please convince me to keep the Jeep, it only has another month or two and I will be getting ready to sell it. The poll results will determine what I'm going to do and of course a few good writeups on why I should keep it.

If you're that fed up just sell it. Obviously you have no attachment to it, so in the end its just a vehicle, give someone else a chance with it.

What all problems are you having with the CJ?
I thought yours was restored/rebuilt, so is it just a matter of working out the small stuff? Please post up your "problems"... .

Well the motor and tranny were rebuilt, everything else has remained untouched, it is just the little things that add up and cost so much, is there an end to them? I don't want to sell it but I can't keep going on like this. The main things that fail on it are in the drive train, usually those repairs are expensive. It was my first vehicle and I don't want to sell it, but there's that other side of me that says 'get rid of it and use the money on the Ford' that I like. The Bronco has a way better platform to work on and wouldn't take much to make it a capable trail rig. It has better parts support so repairs are cheaper. The thing I'd miss most about my Jeep would be the topless experience, the Bronco has a removable shell on the back but would only give open-air pleasure to passengers riding in the back, not so much for the front. A newer model Jeep maybe? But my heart goes to the CJs over the Wrangler and probably wouldn't enjoy one as much. Or if I win the lottery build Jeep on a Bronco frame and drive train, with just a Jeep body? I really like that route because my Jeep would be indestructible but it would cost money. I would surely miss the Jeeps ability to get in between narrow areas like dense forests and switchback trails, something the Bronco would struggle with. I just get so frustrated with my Jeep over all the little things that break, I mean does it ever end?

Keep it, you don't owe anything on it so it isn't costing you any money. Drop the insurance on it down to a maintenance policy if necessary. Then slowly as time and money permits go through the rest of it. You won't get enough money out of it to do anything drastic to the bronco. It has some sentimental value. So step back from it. Work on the bronco, you will someday wish you had never gotten rid of the jeep and kick yourself for it. Then you will have it out there with a lot of the little stuff taken care of and you can go back to enjoying it.

Secondly, any 20-30 year old vehicle being used for a DD will require some wrenching and money from time to time. It sounds like you have not had any serious stuff go wrong...just little things. IMO, and it should have been one of the choices on your poll, you should sell the bronco and put some of that money into your CJ, bank the rest until you need some repairs. I also agree with Ape, that if your burnt out on the CJ, take a break and drive the bronco until you get sick of it...maybe it'll give you a fresh look, and new appreciation of the Jeep! .

When you mention it is "in the shop", is that just figurative in that it's broke down and being worked on, or are you actually paying someone to do these repairs for you?
I looked up your profile, and at 17, here is my advice for you (not the gospel by any means, just my opinion). Keep the CJ (it looks like a nice one). Keep the Bronco. The Bronco will be your daily driver, keep it reliable to get you to school and work. With the CJ, if you're paying a shop to do the work, quit doing that. Since you have a fall-back vehicle, do the work yourself. If you don't know how, learn. Quit paying all that cash for labor, and you'll come to enjoy the Jeep more. Nothing like tackling a problem yourself, and the feeling you get when you get it all back together, fire it up, and see if your fix worked. Now then, if you're already doing the work on the CJ yourself and are still fed up, park it for a while. Get it in storage somewhere that it will not be exposed to the elements. In a year or two, if you are still indifferent towards it, you can sell it to someone else who will enjoy it. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I once had a '77 T-top TA just like smoky and the bandit car. I was in the same boat as you are as little things kept breaking on it. I got fed up with it and a guy walked up to me and ask if I wanted to sell it. I did for $100. I kick myself everyday for getting rid of it. Looking back you will wish you had that Jeep back. Good luck with your what ever you decide.

Well I refuse to sell the Bronco, it is a family heirloom, my grandfather bought it new in 1978 and drove it up until about a year ago when he had to go to the nursing home. He took great care of it, changed the oil every 2,000 miles, changed the transmission fluid every 25,000 miles and always made sure the axles and transfer case were well maintained. He wanted something that he could drive forever and not buy another rig, so he babied it, and it still runs like a champ. As far as the 'shop' goes it is in our shop at the house and yes I do all the work on it myself, it is just the parts bills that add up, dad also makes me help pay power bills for the shop so I try to work on it when it's daylight but it gets dark early here in the winter. I pretty much refuse to let anyone work on it unless I know them pretty good. I may park it for the rest of the winter and wait until May when I can take the top off again then I'll be hooked on it I'm sure! The downside to the Bronco is that it has a persistent oil leak and needs a quart added every week if I daily drive it and until the weather gets warmer I'm not going to tear into that project. Oh and for SKT, here are some pics! Sorry about the crappy quality. This was a few weeks ago when I got the CJ stuck in the garden and had to pull it out with the Bronco.
