Anyone got a Mini 14 or Mini 30? Or have experience with them? I'm curious as to their preformance, etc. Never seen/shot one in person.
I'd just like some general input.
Thanks

Here we go again. You are going to get the same old banal answers that always follow this question on any gun forum. Especially when all the Mattel plastic gun guys find it.

I was given a Mini14 for x-mas. I have not had a chance to fire it, but it looks well made.

I have one and love it. It is very accurate and low recoil. I fell in love with it when I was younger because I was little and couldnt shoulder a big caliber gun.

To what purpose(s) do you intend to use it? Knowing the application(s) would make a valid answer much easier.

Target shooting, probably mostly. As of right now I don't hunt, and I don't own a gun. Looking at getting something to use as my first rifle. I actually have seen/held one, liked the feel. Pretty small, easy to handle, just never shot one. Something for an all purpose rifle. Something that could be transported without much hassle I don't want a .22 really, not that useful if I actually had to use it for anything...Don't want a bolt action either. Also, should probably be useful when the zombies come
Was thinking about maybe getting a Remington 870, but I've got some experience with shotguns, so I didn't ask.
Edit: I'm also not sure that I'd be ready or wanting to own a handgun at this point, maybe I am, but I'm just asking about opinions on the Mini 14/30's.
What it comes down to is I'll be getting a gun this summer (most likely) and am checking out different things.

They're fun to shoot, but for the ridiculous price Ruger wants for them just get an AR-15 / AK.

I'm not really sure if I want an AR-15 or an AK. Arent AR-15's expensive to get quality? Never really looked into them.

Had a stainless mini-14 years ago- had dreampt of owning one since watching the A-team as a kid. I didn't think much of it. Not very accurate, and that skinny barrel would heat up really fast. Later I got a mini-30. All mini-30's are the 'ranch rifle' variant, and if you're going to have a mini, you want this (integral scope mounts action damped to lessen the recoil optics are subjected to). I liked the mini-30 better, and unlike the .223, you could actually hunt legally with the 7.62x39 in most places. The one complaint I had about the mini-30 was the scarcity of high-capacity magazines. This usually only matters to paramilitary psychos like I used to be, but for the record, there is at least 1 30 round magazine made for the mini-30 now.
I felt that the mini-30 was a little more accurate. The fatter barrel seemed to be stiffer/less susceptible to heat warping, but it's still a pretty light barrel.
In my opinion, if you want to shoot 7.62x39, the mini-30 is the only way to go. SKSs and AKs are bullet hoses- not made for accuracy, the sights are crap. Give me a peep sight every time.

The Minis aren't very accurate. You'd be better off with an AR or an M-14.

Can a quality AR or M4 be had for the same price? That is, 650 bucks?

I know NOTHING about AR type of guns...or this brand for that matter...just the price.

From my understand the AR excels mainly in the fact that the stock is inline with the barrel. Thus the recoil goes directly back and not up as much, allowing you to stay on target...that would help in the Zombie Apocalypse.

Eh, $650 for a quality AR would be hard to come by; then again that depends on what you classify quality as. I say go with an AKM, accurate up to the yardage you will need, reliability like no other, and a great damage/penetrating round. Great for plinking around, or if the zombies ever do come you won't need a rifle that shoots past 200-250 yards most of the time. For a SHTF/zombie situation nothing beats an AKM; minimal cleaning, as accurate as you will need, reliability... you don't want to jam when a zombie is coming at you. A good quality one you can easily get below $650, my Vector Arms was $550 and its as well built as a $900 Arsenal. They also look and sound freaking awesome!

I dont think I can/want to spend 700+ on a rifle.
If I decide against a rifle in the mini price range, I'll prolly get a pistol or just an 870
