Rude awakening this morning (aka I almost shot someone)

So at about 6:15am I awoke to a crash upstairs in my house. In my underwear, I grabbed my pistol and slowly, ascended the staircase, only to a see a 6'2" 200+ dude in my daughters bedroom, one foot IN the room, one foot ON the roof through the window.

I ordered him to put his hands where I could see them in a command voice. He froze, turned a little to look at me (he seemed as if he was on his way out already) then pulled a damn Eric Draven and jumped out the window and ran off the roof to a waiting vehicle out front.

XBox, Wii and controllers were untouched, but I think he made a load of noise just getting through the window, and got scared and I caught him on his way out.

Cops took 20 minutes to arrive. They helped me clear the remainder of the outside (I already made sure nobody was in the house myself, going room to room) and wrote a report. Extra patrols for us for the next few days in case they decide to come back. (Doubtful)

How did YOU wake up today?!

apparently I fell asleep while rocking my daughter back to sleep last night, we were warm, comfy and drooling on each other... so much different than yours.

I don't envy that situation, glad you kept your head in it, congrats.

when a "turned a little to look at me" I would have felt threatened and shot him. It's all in how you articulate the report, or at least in rural Oklahoma it is.

Thanks. I'l never take one of the "quiet" nights/mornings for granted again.

Oh I miss Oklahoma! I had some really fun times when I was stationed as a TMC Medic at Ft. Sill.

I'm only 5'8" 150lbs. So had he turned more than he did, or had he made any other move than to run, I'd have fired. I told the reporting officer that. He said I'd be within my rights as long as I was in fear.

I have to get the hell out of Portland. Seriously.

I'd have done the same. Hopefully I'll never have to, but I wouldn't hesitate for a single second.

I woke up thinking "WTF kind of dream was that!?!"

I hope you scared him enough that he won't be bothering you again. He knows you pack, now. That is the great thing about the states that incourage self preservation. The thieves don't know who has hardware and who doesn't. I wouldn't give him more than a second chance though. Next time, someone would be fitting him for a pine box. Shoot to kill.

They were both home and sound asleep. My daughter was sleeping in the next room, having fallen asleep watching a movie with her brother in his room. When I got to the top of the staircase, I woke them both up and told them to get downstairs with their mom.

I think he heard me, because a lot of noise started coming from in her room. The second I saw them at the bottom of the staircase with their mom, it was like a switch flipped and I went on the offense. I kicked open her bedroom door, and he was already halfway out the window.

I served 2 oversees tours in the Army as a CSH Medic, and I spent a minute or two in some hairy situations, but having a 200+ 6'2 guy in your little girls bedroom makes you ANGRY.

Next time, I may not wait for a reason. The fact my little girl could have been in that room is enough reason.

Wow. I'm actually getting really angry just thinking about this.

You should have shot him, no offensebut now he is free to break into someone else's house and they migth not be as lucky as you were to hear him. At least get a leg shot or something so he doesn't get away.

And if by some twist of fate he rolled off the roof and hurt more seriously, natures way of working things out.
