Routine Maintenance Question, please help!

Hey there friends,
As you can see by my Sig, I have a 91 YJ 2.5 with Manual trans.
Last night I was attempting to change the Fluids in the Transmision and Transfer case. I was unsuccessful, I have a couple of questions.

The transfer case check and fill plugs are bolts, and I cannot find a socket that fits it. Do any of you have any idea what size socket those bolts take. The transmission drain plug uses the same. I tried many different sizes and just couldn't find it.

Also, I have a Haynes manual that I was using to learn to do this. It shows where the drain plug is on the transmission but not the fill plug for the transmission. Where do I find that?

One last thing, how often do you change these fluids.
Transmission
Tranfer case
Rear differential-I did this last night
Front differential-Did this too.

Thanks everyone,

The transfer case plugs take a 30mm socket.

The tranny fill plug is located on the right (passenger) side about half way up and slightly towards the rear of the transmission.

Chilton's recommends that those fluids are changed every 48000 miles, but if you do a lot of heavy offroading, I would recommend sooner (30000-35000?).

Hope this info helps

i do my tranny, diff and t-case fluids 2 times a year.i get into lots of mud and water.so i do it a bit more often .but it is cheap insurance instead of new gears,etc...i only do this because it sees extreme duty. i play very hard!

Do you notice better shifting, when you replace these fluids? Mine is a little Rough and I replaced the clutch a few months ago.

do you go through deep water? do you play in deep mud?no there is usually no change.only one time, that's cause the tranny and t-case were over half full of water.that was a bit more than usual., my old tranny was on it's last leg,i'm pretty sure that trip did it in!that's the only reason why i do my fluids so often.sometimes i'll do them after a real good trip...just depends,as i said it is real cheap insurance for your tranny and t-case.

I've heard that synthetic tranny fluid will somewhat improve a sticky shifter, especially in colder weather. Don't know for sure though, but I will soon
