we thought about just stopping at a rest stop and sleeping in the car but she thinks thats unsafe now. We have no money for a hotel... anyone have any ideas

The only real off-road park is in Gilbert, MN. It's about 1 hour NW of Duluth and about 4 hours north of Minneapolis. There are also some trails up in the north part in the Superior National Forest.

The wife and I slept in rest stops in South Dakota and Minnisota on our way home from our road trip to Wyoming and had no problems at all but we were only in each rest stop for about 2 hours.

alot of rest stops have someone there all night, I would think they are pretty safe, x2 on the gilbert off road park, its the only one I've ever been to, but I am very impressed with it.

Im probably about to move to MN, all I know is that its going to snow everyday. So I'll have to get my tow hooks on, (to pull others out of course) From what I hear its mostly flat, I have been there a couple of times around the twin cities and chanhassen mostly. I didnt see any hills, that was very said. I have some real obstacles/goals for my cherokee in SC.
