As far as wood or synthetic, it is, of course, just personal preference. I guess I'm a bit of a traditionalist, but I've always preferred wood. Synthetic guns have just always given me a plasticky toy vibe. A nice wood always looks and feels better to me.
Here's my 20ga Express:
My dad bought me this gun as a gift. I really like it, but if it were up to me, and I had the money, I'd get the 870 Wingmaster. You may even be able to find a slightly used one for around the same price as an Express. Just my opinion.

Oh if I came across a gently used Wingmaster...it would be mine...very good lookin gun.

Bah, you got one of those funny looking laminated stock ones. Mine's stained walnut. I guess I'm even more of a traditionalist than you are; laminated stocks just seem too...fake...like linolium tile. Maybe I'll get a pic of mine later. The bead-blasted coating they put on the Express models is really cool too (I don't think it's actually blueing though, possibly a phosplate coating).
Just noticed: Remington discontinued the 11-87 Premier? Does that put extra value on mine?

yeah, you do know that the laminated stock are actually better than the old skewl wood furniture though right?

I like the way wood looks, I'm just not sure of its durability...I want it to look good in a few years. I guess I could just be more careful with it.

If you want your wood to look good, pull it off and put it in the gun safe and only put it back on for those special occasions (yeah I know sounds NWS). People who own fire arms but never shoot them for fear of ruining them mystify me. It is like marrying a super model, not having "relations" with her but rubbin one out to her picture...

I've seen people who have beat the hell out of their guns, but all of mine look like new, as far as the wood goes. I was taught not to throw mine down on the rocks. I guess if I were going to let my shotgun double as a club for wounded game, I might get a synthetic stock.
Kind of like schitzangiggles said, a gun is like a woman. Keep them cleaned and lubed and they're good as new. If you throw them around, pretty soon they're gonna look like ****.

I think yall took me wrong there. It will be used, regarless of the finish that I end up with, I wont cry at night or lose sleep over a few scratches. I wont be throwing it on any rocks, but crap happens and I like to keep nice things nice. If I ended up with a Wingmaster I would sure like to keep it clean. Im not afraid of wood by any means, have used plenty of them and see ones that have been around for a while. This reminds me of my buddies Remington 11-87. his dad had it when he was a kid and was out with his Bird dog. the dog walked out on to a frozen pond and fell through, so his dad used the butt of the gun to break the ice to get the dog back out and it sure has the scars to show it. Oh and if you're wondering the dog didnt make it.

You can't go wrong with a Remington 870. I still have my 870 Wingmaster from 25 years ago. It only shoots 2 3/4" shells but it gets the job done. I have never had a single problem with it.

The 870 is probably the greatest shotgun ever made.
Its affordable, easy to use, works great every time, and proven.

I bought a 870 many years ago that came with a shorty barrel in addition to the 26". Dirt cheap (<500), shoots EVERY TIME, great in the field and spends most of it's life wearing the shorty in the closet with 00 buckshot. I've shot skeet, birds, the whole nine with the same package. Best gun I own.

Yep, don't be afraid to use it. With time it will develop a nice patina anyway.
