yeah, i wont be using AutoCAD for super detailed 3D things. Just basically I'm going to be doing yards and whatnot and the occasional 3D design.

You can get laptops these days spec'ed out the same as desktops. I think Alienware's higer-end models even have desktop processors crammed into a laptop chassis. But for what you need to do for class you don't even need anything that fancy. My HP rolls out your basic 3-d model just fine.
