Reccommended COA for explosive material disposal
I'm going on a camping trip tomorrow to a buddy of mine's land to help clear and dispose of some underbrush near and around the campsite on his primitive property. I'll also be cutting a trail from the road to the campsite, some 200 yards of dense growth.
But my question is this, at the camping site there are many (8-10) old canisters of propane that are rusted and could release their contents while I'm there. I'm not exactly sure why or how they got there, but they've been there for several seasons now and they are unsafe to be around. I don't know what I should do to get rid of these, obviously I'll try to neutralize them in some manner and cart the trash out, but what is the best way to discharge the canisters without having to actually touch them, for fear that they'll rust through with my fiddling and I'll lose digits. I want to do this in the safest way possible and still get rid of these hazards. These are not a thing that I really want to touch, but I want to neutralize these before they become a hazard to me and the others going with me. Any tips and advice?

They would have to be very very old to rust through to the point of rupture. Id be surprised if they are even full (being left at a campsite). Id just handle them wearing gloves and with regular caution.

get the dumbest neighbor you can find to move them to the center of a field, plow around them, get to the edge of the field, and unload on said rusty beasties.

Last time I was there a few months ago, several of them had the little white plastic caps still over the threads. You might be right however, its probable that they are mostly empty, but I'd like to err on the side of caution.

Odds are they're empty. I usually recap my empties just to get rid of the cap on the new cylinder. I can't imagine someone taking $100 of propane out in the middle of a field and just leaving it.

Maybe they were trashed you know? I've heard of people leaving their full coolers and such, maybe they did it with these too ya know? Do be careful with it, although I think the shooting method would be cool to see and post on youtube!

I say treat them like IEDs and blow them in place. Be creative, have some fun, and try to be somewhat safe. Lets you figure at the most their lethalilty would be what 100 yards? So take a good .308 out there with you and release some aggression.

Don't have a .308 but I will be taking out my 8mm Mauser and my AK-47. It looks like taking these out from a safe distance is my best bet. It'll be a very safe distance and I'll be prone to minimize the chance of getting hit with shrapnel. We'll see what happens.

Four parts Thermite. One part Play-Doh. Insert Magnesium ribbon, Light, and be somewhere else...
