small block chevy motors are a dime a dozen. go get a running sb400 and put it in.

Looks like it may be a set of 882 heads on it. Not bad heads, but they can be prone to cracks if the motor is allowed to overheat. Have them magnafluxed at a machine shop.

It's all we have to work with right now. Granted the motor was given to him for free from his dad... I think we can make due. We don't have a time constraint and this is just a side project. IMO, a project like this (tearing down the motor, fixing it up and getting it running) would be a greater learning experience than if we were to just find a running motor and trans and toss it in. We already have it up on the stand so might as well move forward instead of being lazy about it.

Thanks man. Once we get the distributor out we'll be able to get the top end off to see how everything is under there.

Use a torch and heat the distributor shaft some. After removing the oil pump you should be able use a wood block on the end and tap it out with a BFH.

While it is sitting, get some cans of Marvel Mystery Oil and fill the cylinders through the sparkplug holes. If any of the bores are rusted this will help free them up.
At the very least I'd plan for a set of rod/main bearings and some light polishing on the crank journals with some fine emory cloth. If the rust isn't bad you might be able to get away with a dingle hone and some rings.

We 'salvaged' a new BeCool radiator with dual fans, a Dakota Digital gauge set, and a set of stainless headers (still in the box).

That explains how you were able to id the SS console and dash so quickly.
Good eyes shorty.

Nice! Looks like fun, the body is pretty damn clean it looks.
My girl has a 69 nova thats pretty cherry, and her sister drives a 67 chevelle. I'd say her dad bought them good first cars, haha.

Thanks man! The body is real clean for something that's been outside since 1971
There's a champagne colored 71 nova right next to it with a small block in it. All it really needs is a tune up and it'll run again. It is a LOUD mother ****er apparently
I've seen your girls nova posted somewhere else on here, very very nice car.

Well make sure you do this one justice! Looks like you're doing a good job so far. Glad you're bringing it back to its former glory. I wish I had room to work on stuff like that. Gonna be tight enough space working on my engine swap in the waggy.

Somewhere I have the garage pics from when my dad and I did the body on my Malibu. This pic is from a couple of years ago, the paint is about 15 years old now...

Nice chevelle. When I saw the pic, the first thing that came to mind was that how glad that car sits the way it does. Amazing how many people still buy tires and wheels too big and slap on air shocks.

Guess who got the intake manifold off and turned the engine over to look at the crank.
Crank and what not looks good and you can see the cam, it looks good too.
Got the heads off too.
We gotta get the harmonic balancer out. We have the tool for it but the bolts we have aren't long enough.
The cylinders....well they could be in better shape. There is definitely rust holding them in place. That's the whole part of this project, rebuild and make new again. Don't mind the missing bearing cap, we took that off and put it back on for whatever reason.
