Re-Enlisting in the USMC
Short and sweet back story: Enlisted two days after I turned 18(signed the papers July 23 2003), shipped out March 15, 2004, got injured 3 weeks into boot(broken foot), spent two months in MRP, went back to training, broke foot again, spent another 2 months in MRP, got Honorable Disch. under Medical conditions on July 23, 2004.
Soo on with my story... I've been saying for the last 18 months that I would begin my re-enlistment to the USMC in January of 2009. I decided to wait that long so I had more than enough time to make sure it was what I wanted, get in shape, sell my car, settle some debts, and generally get squared away. I went to the local RSS (recruiting substation) today to get my paperwork started, and called up the VA (veteran's affairs) to get my medical exam scheduled so the government can confirm my injury is no longer an issue. I should hear back from the VA tomorrow, and I go back to the RSS tomorrow to finish the paperwork. apparently to re-enlist after being inactive takes a month or two for my papers to get processed and approved, so at least it's started. For those that don't know, I'll be signing the papers to become a linguist(translator), most likely in Arabic. I'll try to keep this updated as I go through the motions(again) for anyone else who is looking to enlist or re-enlist in any branch. --------------------------------- Update Jan. 20 2009: 1. Medical packet sent in last week 2. Security clearance packet sent today 3. ASVAB Thursday (Jan 22) 4. Physical(Medical qualification) Friday(Jan 23) 5. DLAB date pending ASVAB results 6. Re-enlistment date pending medical and security clearance plus ASVAB/DLAB results I took the Practice ASVAB today because I've been out of school for a few years, I scored a 91. My first enlistment I scored a 76 on the practice and a 94(AFQT) on the real ASVAB, so I'm not too worried. I just can't wait to take my DLAB and get back in =) --------------------------------- --------------------------------- Update Jan. 22 2009 Took the ASVAB Physical tommorow at 3:30AM I scored a 97 out of 99 on the ASVAB with the following line scores for the USMC: MM: 127 GT: 132 EL: 131 CL: 128 I believe the maximum line score for the USMC stuff is 135, but I'm not positive. Not too shabby =) --------------------------------- --------------------------------- Update Jan. 24 2009 Passed my physical, it only took me 5 hours at MEPS, as opposed to the usual 12, so I got a few hours of sleep before work afterwards =) I should be taking my DLAB sometime next week. After I take my DLAB and qualify, I just have to wait for my medical waiver to get approved and then I re-enlist, it's getting closer every day! --------------------------------- --------------------------------- Update Jan. 31 2009 Took the DLAB Friday morning, I scored a 109 out of 110 maximum needed, so I got my category IV qualification that I wanted. My Medical & Security packets were approved yesterday as well. I should hear back on my Re-Enlistment packet by Wednesday next week(Feb. 4 2009) Re-Enlistment should be some time next week after my Re-Enlistment packet clears. I found out that Cat IV linguists receive an extra $700-$1000 per month in addition to base pay and any other pay, so I'll be making the equivalent of E-5 base pay @ E-2, lol. My ship date is looking to be somewhere around late April to early July. ---------------------------------

Good luck Bro and SEMPER FI !!!!!
That Linguist school is 64 months long. And if you learn it the U.S.M.C. pays you extra for it once you are done with the school. I ran into a Marine on the range who knows Arabic and she gets $200 extra a month. Not to mention a NICE reenlistment bonus. |

I don't doubt that bonus, any Catgory 4 language(Arabic, Chinese, etc) is extremely hard to find people for, plus all the extensive training required to get them to a proficient level, and very few people even want to take the time to learn a new language as hard as that. I personally love learning new languages, I love knowing what people are saying when they don't think anyone can understand them.
