Possible problem with a cam sensor??

I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo straight 6 4.0 2 wheel drive. for a few months it will do something like a hiccup & then sometimes it will die & not want to start. After it sits a few minutes it evenually starts. When it does start it runs rough. Could this be the cam sensor positioner or crankshaft sensor or both? My mechanic is scratching his head & so am I. He has kept it & driven it for 2 wks & it never duplicated the problem with him but it did it again yesterday when I was driving it. It never throughs a code on the computer. Why is this? Can anyone help me out?
