Here's my quick attempt...

One of my daughter's rockin' Bratz guitars!

Some dude.... What the heck is he looking at?

Pretty easy actually.

I put the camera on a tripod, set the shutter for 30 seconds, on self timer, the flash was set to second curtain sync with TTL metering. I prefocused on the spot I was going to stand, turned off auto focus and hit the shutter button. I used a little red key chain light to write in the air. Remember to stay put until the flash goes off.

For the rockin' Bratz guitar it's pretty much the same, except I'm not in the photo. If you have a better light you can do more. You can also not use a flash, which is what it looks like they did in the guitar shot you posted. In that case you can set the shutter to bulb and lock it open and paint to you hearts content. Oh, remember you can't have any lights on in the room, or they will expose you subject.

Grab some gear and have at it.

Thanks for the explanation Jeffro. I was trying to figure out how to do it with out showing the arm motion of the subject but had no clue. I was actually going towards the route of it being manipulated on Photoshop or some other program. The lack of other light and use of the flash covered it.
