Perhaps the most idiotic comment I ever heard from an internet company

Here's a little background.
My apartment complex had a separate contract for cable modem, and dish network. The cable modem company sucked horribly. So they got rid of it.
Now the same one that provides us dish (extremely overpriced: They charge $99 for the $59 dish package) acquired the internet contract.

Anyway, because I thought we would finally have some normal connection speeds, i went with the 3mbps for 24.99/month.

So I turn it on and YEAY! The speeds are 3.5mbps FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS!

I call these sons of *****es and here is what these moronic imbeciles tell me!!!

Well, if you run limewire, or if you're downloading something and not just browsing, for example playing a game or using napster, we will automatically cut you down to 1mbps so you don't steal all the bandwith.

I am NOT a philosophical person, but this begs the following question:

WHAT THE FREAK AM I PAYING FOR 3mbps if they're telling me I can't use it?

Does this make any sense?

If they sell you 3.5 MBPS I THINK they are required to let you have that. Of course, I think they cover themselves well by saying that it IS provided by them but conditions deteriorate it or somesuch BS like that. ISPs have started throttling file sharers, haven't you followed that? (Not many people are a nerd like I am though...) Many have admitted to meddling with P2P traffic and such.

Is the satellite DTV/Hughes? If so, they suck anyway... Not sure on a throttling clause.

Read your contracts people. Those speeds are BURST SPEEDS, not constant. That is why all adverts say UP TO X MBPS. I would bet money on the fact that they can do whatever they wish with your contracted internet. Get DSL over the phone line and be done with it.

Sorry for saying this, but isn't 3.5 mbps similiar to Netzero which is like $10.99 a month? I pay roughly $35 month and get 54 mbps on my wireless. It is much faster on my direct lan line. Doesn't your local telephone company provide a high speed internet for a cheaper price?

For $99/month for Dish is crazy as well. They should be ashamed for ripping you guys off like that. Not even sure how legal that is to overcharge you like that?

Not even close. Netzero is a dialup company which without factoring in tcp overhead gives you 56kbps. Big difference to 3500 kbps (3.5mbps)

That connection speed you are looking at MickeyMouse is to your router (54mbps is 802.11g), not to the outside world.

Perfectly legal to charge whatever they want for a service.

Thanks BeachinXJ for clearing that up for me. I thought he was getting really ripped off based on what I thought. Obviously, I do not know alot about computers. BTW, checked the speed at the website and it read 1.24mbps.

Comcast was throttling P2P but got have promised to stop doing it. Something with the courts made them change their mind.
