Ohio Construction

For anyone out there that lives in Ohio or anyone who has driven through Ohio, you would know that Ohio is the the Nation's capital for road construction. I live in Grove City, Ohio and the main vein that goes through practically the whole city is under construction along with every freeway and highway leading in around the city. Well, now to the point: I was driving down the main vein early yesterday morning. In the construction area they've got you weaving through the different sides of the road. I see headlights coming but dont think anything of it. Next thing I know, I have this woman in a little Toyota right in front of me going on the wrond side of the road. We both stopped in the nick of time with her side centimeters from the front of my GC. At first I was really ticked, until I seen the look on her face and then I couldn't help but to laugh it off. She was just staring out in front of her like a deer staring into headlights. I kept watching her as I drove away and she just sat there until she was out of sight. I kinda felt sorry for her.

I don't know what it is about Ohio streets, especially near Cincy, but I HATE them ALL. I guess I'm just not used to them, but I have NO idea where i'm at. Most are in horrible shape, and I'm being beat up in my YJ while I try to figure out how to get back on I-75, which I'm actually parked under. In Kentucky, we don't have one way residential streets in the suburbs, or have to merge into them either. I can tell you, my next accident is going to be in Ohio.

Job security brother. Job security. You want a bad road? Take 50 otherwise known as River Road out towards Sayler Park. It is under construction now and is horrendous. Think it is bad now in Ohio? Wait. Kentucky and Ohio are in the works to replace the 71-75 bridge and Interstate 75 is to be totally redone in the next 10 years in town. When I say redone, it is going to be rerouted and overhauled totally.

I like the one way streets and the weird merges too though. Whenever I give someone directions in Cincy, there is always a Cincinnati straight, meaning just follow the lane no matter how many twists or turns....eventually it will go straight...

you have it all wrong!!!! Have you ever been to Las Vegas lately? They are the king of road construction. the projects that take two years I swear could be finished in 2 months before...

I moved into my new house on a new street three years ago. In this time our street which is a side street has been ripped up and repaved for various projects 5 times. Most lasting 3-5 months. That means in three years my road has not been under construction for a total of about 3 months. Thats the last three months i have been here.

Freeways? Ya rifght.... they are a joke.. Maybe Ill charge the ole video camara and take a drive and see if I can never leave construction while driving around... lol

Seriously. i dont understand why thay cannot get a few jobs less goign and get them done FASTER.... Why don't we rent lights and generators and get the work done at nigth while people are not headign to work in rush hour? Why dont we work 24 hour shifts and hire more people to get the jobs done wuicker? Apparently with the time it takes we could do that and still mployee everyone for a long fulfilled career.

Ohio may be pretty bad, but how come Phoenix can build an entire freeway in the time it takes vegas to repave my little street.

The bottom line is that road repair has become POLITICAL with the unionization of government workers, and exponentially-rising local taxes.

It used to be a crew went out to fix a hole in the road. Now, they send an ARMY out to barricade lanes...place plastic drums...put the flashing arrows in place...set up the barricade trucks...

...and stand in a circle around the newest worker, usually a girl, who fills the hole with cold patch.

Seriously. When they're in a hurry, you can see it. It doesn't take nine months to throw up a bridge. In an emergency, I have seen it done in nine weeks. But...these road-repair projects seem to be filled with stalling and dawdling...

...and the end result doesn't usually last more than a season. I don't think it's accidental; I think it's job security and union efforts to grow the Highway Departments union rosters; and local governments' efforts to grow the payroll (and get a loyal voting base).

It could all be ended by transforming Highway Repair jobs into a sort of workfare; as was done in some Western states: a low-wage job that was always there for the desperate; who would move on when they could find a better job.

It would be a better use of tax monies. Really, we don't need to cultivate a cadre of Career Road Laborers.

I used to think OH was bad for road construction, then I moved here. They have all damn year that it is good enough weather to work on roads, so you think they would spread it out a little, NOPE, all teh roads at once, and it is still work on them all year round. I have seen more of those damn orange barrels and cones out here than in OH

Yea, river road is being replaced by PRUS construction...the same people working on my street. It will be one year next month since they started the project, and have only been able to replace a 200' section so far. Also, the rest of the street is completely a mess, due to the heavy load of construction equipment.

I haven't seen river road lately, have to go look.

My mom has a map from 5 years ago that is still correct on most of the road work. In Texas they are doing alot of the work at night, but the lights are so damn bright you can't see when you are driving down the highway and it creates traffic jams from 11 at night until the next morning.

they are having to redo a lot of little roads here due to new high-density subdivisons. There is one in particular I am suprised there arn't daily fatalities. It is a red-light where when you drive across you have to follow a dotted line that looked like someone with a can of spray paint made instead of the road lines. If you go straight across the intersection like it has been for the past 20 years, you are in the opposite lanes of traffic.
