Formerly stationed there. Spent 7 years at Spangdahlem. I learned enough German to get by although I can't read or write it. Honestly, it was far easier for them and myself to communicate in English. Just as with the States where accents abound, I learned German in an area that was similar to Southern accents here. People from other areas of Germany had difficulty understanding what I was saying and I had difficulty understanding them.

Thats what I figured. Didn't know if you were just saying that or trying to say the whole universities name.

I spent 5 years in Stuttgart and learned quite a bit but more out of meeting chicks and my job (LEO). learned early (from a chick) that they all german kids are required to take english in school but they would not talk english to you unless you talked (or tried) to talk german to them. worked well and taught me more of the language. of course that was 25 years ago.

Ich kann gut Deutsch lesen und sprechen, aber es ist manchmal schwer meine Großeltern von Österreich zu verstanden. Sie sprechen "redneck" Deutsch.

None right?
While I grew up with the ability to understand German, I never actually learned how to speak and write it. My curiousity was peaked, so yes, I used Google Translator.

I plan to learn Spanish, as my husbands family is of Mexican/Native American descent and all speak it. I wish my kiddo to grow up bilingual.
