Need Help with my Laptop
Any computer geeks on here??
I have a dell inspiron laptop. It was infected with a virus yesterday- I believe it was the WinPC Defender virus. I tried to just completely re-install windows and start over from scratch. Unfortunately when I put in the CDs to do so all I get is a black screen???? I do see the Dell startup window but then after that it just goes completely black. Can it be saved or is it completely gone?? I ended up having to buy another laptop- but I'm hoping to salvage this one still.

That's like selling your Jeep because it needs tires and you have a stuck lug nut. Broken software doesn't need new hardware to fix.

Check your boot order and make sure it's set to boot the cdrom first. You should be able to get to the bios with either F2, F10, or DEL right after turning it on. (depends on the model) The boot order should be under the boot section. + and - move items around.
If you can't get it working, give ubuntu a try. If all you do is web browsing, it works fine. No virii for it either. Flamers, bring it on!

keepishop- Thanks for at least saying something useful- we tried that already. It won't do anything!!!!!!
Is there a way to reset it internally by taking it apart??? Maybe a battery or something that can be removed internally?? The reason I bought a new laptop right away is because I don't have the time to wait for this one to be fixed. |

Will it try to boot to the hard drive (infected windows) if you leave the CD out? Does the CD drive spin up and try to load?

there may be a patch or fix for that from microsoft. search the security section for it. otherwise check the task manager and msconfig to see if it starts up when comp is booted up. if it is in msconfig then disable it restart and see if it helps. also may be get a good antivirus and scan your comp.

Do you get the Dell Splash Screen without the CDs in it? (Black screen with Dell Logo) If so, look at the top right when it flashes (only have a second or so) and it should list some F# options, I haven't looked at a Dell Laptop recently, but there should be an F-Key assigned to "System Restore" or "System Recovery" use that option. That is IF Dell still puts the Restore CD on a separate Partition.
If for some reason they don't. Try doing the same thing mentioned above but hit F12 and it will give you a boot option menu, try inserting the CD then and waiting a few seconds then select CD-Rom.

I'd get one of your local geek friends to take a look at it for you.

And whatever you do, don't bring it to some random PC Repair guy you don't know.. You WILL get reamed most likely. Especially Best Buy, they charge outrageous prices for menial work, and the one locally normally can't fix anything aside from re-seating RAM..
