Need advice on an Exploder

A buddy has a 2000 explorer and asked for help with upper ball joints. I told him to bring it over in the morning but I was thinking that I heard they had to have the whole control arm changed as they are one piece.
Anyone with first hand knowledge of this ?? Thanks.

yes you have to replace the whole upper arm, you can replace ball joints only on the lowers

it is easier changin the whole arm anyway, this should help:
