My model car thread (pics)

Started building a Revell 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge the other day. My first car model kit. I'll log in my daily progress. I'm hoping to get some tips and whatnot from some of you. My goals are to do this as nicely as possible and as accurately as I can within the bounds of using the parts supplied. Here's an example of what I mean: The kit came with chrome-plated rims, but on the actual car they are a duller silver color, so I stripped them and they are awaiting a spray of steel paint.

As of 6-14-2007

My operation:

Some more paint...

Engine in blue:

Body sanded down, interior and engine bay painted satin black:

I ran out of aluminum

Notes to self:

Buy aluminum and light blue 1/4oz, gl orange 3oz spray, more propellant.

Enamel paints take way too long to dry...

Mopar? Camaro=Chevy=GM

I would think Jegs would support GM because they have 2 Jegs-sponsored pro-stock Cobalts....

Jeep is MOPAR though!

Nice ride!

Heh, I turned an entire spare bedroom into a studio for this very purpose. I've got a shelf full of cool kits that I'd find on sale. I only work on them every once in a while though. My latest learning project has been perfecting glossy paint. I've found that the process is very very tedious which is why I don't do it often. I use an airbrush and acrylic paint for everything.

If anyone has any tips on creating a smooth glossy finish with ease feel free to post it!

Possibly bad discovery here....

Pieces are missing. Dash, armrests, radiator shroud, and power steering thing. Not good. I should have expected this; I had opened the box many years ago when I got it and probably lost them then. So now I have to get another, 1 problem, Revell doesn't sell it anymore!

Possibly good discovery here....

Revell sells a different one now though...

My box (you can see it in the 1st pic too) looks like this one:

The new one looks like this:

I saw it at the store today. You figure it's the exact same model? I heard somewhere that it takes about $100,000 to design and make dies and molds for a single model car kit. I can't imagine Revell would make two different versions of the same car.

More than likely it is the same kit. Model companies release the same subject every year or so with different box art, different decals and paint schemes, etc. Iam surprised that the newer kit doesn't have 28 inch rims on the cover.

Krylon crystal glaze. use light coats, and don't leave finished products in direct sunlight, it turns yellow. this stuff will make your paint look wet and glossy.

Today is body painting day and I hope all goes well. Using a 3oz spray can of Testors Gloss Competition Orange enamel. Here's my plan of attack:

2x light tack coat, 30 mins in between
30mins drying, then a wet coat
24 hrs drying, apply waterslide decals, then apply tack coat and 2x wet coat of acrylic clear coat
Wet sand with 1200-2000 grit, then hand buff with fine and super fine rubbing compounds, then wax

Should come out like an orange mirror. I think the key here is to have as thin as possible a color coat and just enough clear so that it doesn't get sanded through.

Crossing fingers that there will be no runs or crazing.

I will hopefully pick up that other model today...

I use toothpicks for the glue, but I have a few very fine brushes for the paint

My own tip: Use a roll of floral wire, 28ga. or so, and bend it into racks or hangers for your parts. If you are spraying them, you can get all sides at one time instead of just laying them on paper or something. Also easier to move parts around so you don't have to touch drying paint.

if you're missing parts call revell, i've done it a couple times for missing decals, instructions, tires and they have always sent me the stuff free sign of a good company i say.
