my dog is getting put to sleep tomorrow

well we got bad news from our vet today about our lab/springer spaniel mix. he has been battling with tumors for quite some time now and now it is effecting his brain. he lost all feeling in his face, he drools alot now, he hasnt eaten in three days, he cant control his bowels, and all he does is lay. the vet says that he probably wont make it through the rest of august, and if we let it go it will be a VERY painful death for him. So we came to the conclusion to put him to sleep tomorrow . We are burying him out by our hunting camp. It was a very very saddening feeling to be digging my dog's grave. Me and my brother got him as a christmas present in 1999. He was a great friend and companion to me. Goodbye Quincy, you will be missed.

Does anybody have any kind of stories that they can relate this to?

That sucks man! Sorry about it. I had my Black Lab put to sleep a couple years ago, he had Heart tumors. After 17 years it kind of rips your heart out. Good luck tommorrow.

About a year ago we lost our Lab/Great Dane mix Cocoa It was tough as she was my sons 5th birthday present in 1998. At least she went peacfully at home around the family that loved her. Pets are such a mixed bag of emotions over their lifetimes, but dogs are especially difficult to lose because they become so much a part of your family. Sorry to hear about your friend Quincy.

Sorry to hear that OP. It really is sad when you have to do that. We had to do it to our 16 year old shih tzu Emily. Great lil pup, got her after I was born. She just wouldn't go though and was just suffering...so we had to make the decision to put her down.

I'm very sad to hear about your dog.
We put our black lab named CJ to sleep 2 years ago after she experienced a lot of the same problems your dog is having. It was best for her, but very very tough to do. She was a wedding gift from my wife's immediate family. We had her for nearly 15 years. I miss her, but the now 2 year old choc lab (Roxy) has filled a void that CJ left behind.
We drove CJ to the vet in the Jeep that she loved riding in one last time. I had to carry her to the Jeep and then into the Vets' office.

I got my first dog,a Rottweiler, while I was in college. He was there when I got married and for the birth of my two children. He developed cancer like many purebred Rottweilers. He let me know when he was ready. Hardest day of my life. He was a true friend. My prayers are with Quincy, you, and your family. Remember, all dogs go to heaven. Someday, you'll be hunting with him again.

I'm sorry to hear of your friend and his passing . It is a very sad thing to have to say good bye to such a friend as your pet and hunting companion . I know it doesn't help right now but the memories of the good times afield will help with the loss of your pal .
I put my girl to rest after 17 yrs. of unconditional comapionship and layed her to rest in the field stones of her favorite hunting spot . That was many years ago and I still think of her fondly & often ...... never had a dog so devoted or intelligent .
My thoughts are with you .........

There are few things worse than losing a dog.

Thoughts and prayers.

That sucks! I am soooo sorry for your situation, yet fear some day soon I will be there too. My pal is 15 this year and is a LARGE fellow...

Hang in there and take comfort in knowing you were blessed to be his pal. (err that's how I look at it anyway)

I too had to let my buddy go last year. My 14yo lab mix "Buddy" was a very special part in my life and it was the hardest thing I have had to do in my 30 years. I know this sounds rediculous, but I was pretty sure I was never going to get over it.......but I did. And you will too! Its tough but you will think of all the things you did together and that alone keeps him alive in your heart.

Woodie sorry to hear. Lost my dog suddenly a few years ago and someone posted this

This poem has been floating around here whenever peoples pets pass... hopefully it helps you

By Chuck Wells, Palmyra, N.Y.

I remember bringing you home. You were so small and cuddly with your tiny paws and soft fur.

You bounced around the room with eyes flashing and ears flopping. Once in awhile, you’d let out a little yelp, just to let me know this was your territory.

Making a mess of the house and chewing on everything in sight because became a passion, and when I scolded you, you just put your head down and looked up at me with those innocent eyes, as if to say, .“I’m sorry, but I’ll do it again as soon as soon as you’re not watching.”

As you got older, you protected me by looking out the window and barking at everyone who walked by.

When I had a tough day at work, you would be waiting for me with your tail wagging just to say, “Welcome home. I missed you.” You never had a bad day, and I could always count on you to be there for me.

When I sat down to read the paper and watch TV, you would hop on my lap, looking for attention. You never asked for any thing more than to have me pet your head over my leg.

As you got older, you moved around more slowly. Then one day, old age finally took its toll, and you couldn’t stand on those wobbly legs anymore. I knelt down and patted you lying there, trying to make you young again. You just looked at me as if to say you were old and tired and that after all these years of not asking for anything, you had to ask me for one last favor.

With tears in my eyes, I drove you one last time to the vet. One last time, you were lying next to me.

For some strange reason, you were able to stand up in the animal hospital; perhaps it was your sense of pride.

As the vet led you away, you stopped for an instant, turned your head, and looked at me as if to say, “Thank you for taking care me.”

I thought “No, thank you for taking care of me.”

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
