Massachusetts people- local info needed.
alright, i'm sure there would be better places to ask for this info, but i would trust another jeepers opinion..
this summer/fall the wife and i are heading up to maine and wanted to stop 3/4 of the way in MASS. i'm looking for a nice, small town (preferably an "old" town) to spend the night. any locals know of a nice small town thats somewhat cheap to stay in or around (north -east of) the Worcester area?

For "Old New England" towns, your best bet might even be stopping in Sturbridge (right off 84 and 90), as very few towns in northeast MA have much of anything to offer.
I originally thought you just wanted a quiet place to stay and assuming you're coming up 290 or 90 and taking 495 I'd suggest Stow, Maynard, Harvard, or Ayer...they're right off 495 and midway between Worcester and Lowell, neither of which you wanna stay in, and they're pretty small and quiet towns.

thanks for the input.... i'll research some of those towns and see which would make a good stopping point to spend 1/2 a day and night in!

I was going to say Sturbridge too.... while you are there, check out Hyland orchard... (Patriot Brewing) on Arnold road, which is right off rt 20 in Fiskdale right over the line. Awesome beer, there is an apple orchard and a petting zoo. In the nice weather, you can go inside and get a beer, the walk around the place with it.
It is about 2 hours away from me, but closer to some of the other members in my club, so we hold our meetings there ![]() Edit: Here is a nice place to stay for a few days too... pricey, but very nice, I went to a wedding there a few years ago and stayed in one of the Houses / suites... http://www.publickhouse.com/ It is 140 - 160 / night... but heck motel 6 is $72.99 / night, even if you show up at 3 am drunk and leave at 8... And cheap places don't have a pastry shop ![]() Edit 2: to stay in the inn there starts at $90...

Id have to say sturbridge is really the only old new england town left and does leave you some things to do. Other small towns around me are ayer, shirley asbhy. however not much to do around there. all else fails go to fitchburg thats where i am.

Depending on if you want to travel some extra distance, consider taking Rt 91 from Hartford into Springfield (roll up your windows and lock your doors
) and head north to Greenfield. From there, head east on Rt 2. North-central Mass is still "olde new england", especially around the Quabbin Resevoir.Don't pick up any bad habits before you come to Maine. ![]()

![]() Although I have been there and it really is a "quaint" city. Just time it so you are not around when the clubs get out... Cobblestone streets, old buildings...nice architecture. |
