Yeah, but look at how much it will cost to drive one of these. I bet insurance would be pretty damn high considering you could take out an entire block if you lost control of one of these.

I think peterson's answered that in one of their issues. Pretty much, the less coverage you get, the less questions they'll ask. So if you're lucky, all they'll need to know is that it is a 1960's kaiser truck.

Either one of the trucks will cost me $3000. $3250 after taxes and title fees.

I won't be driving it every day. 10mpg at $2.25 a gallon for diesel. WVO/heating oil mix can be used off road. Progressive Commercial quoted me $1200 a year for insurance. It can also be registered/insured as a historic vehicle for less than $200 a year. I'd be using it more than what is allowed for historic plates though.

I'll eventually install a winch. It's an extra $500 for a truck with a winch and i'd rather just wait on it, as i'm saving up for a Nikon D300. I'd need the winch for this sweet A frame hoist (that I couldn't use with the van body)

You'd be better off building a plywood shack on the M35 or finding a new style, plastic tarp. It'll keep vehicle weight and still provide shelter when camping.
Besides, the price difference would buy you a little generator that could run a microwave and blender.
|
That sounds really terrible. I'd hate to be in some kind of off-camber situation where normally i'd be okay, but instead flop onto my side because of a 1.5ton box rocking back and forth.
I'm getting a Detroit 6-71 for almost free to screw around with. If I can actually rebuild it and get it running, i'd probably swap out the LDT-465, as it's only a light duty engine. Twice as much horsepower and torque, and 15 mpg.

A friend of a friend has a 2.5ton and a 5 ton. I see him around driving the deuce pretty often. I bought a lot of Jeep parts off of this guy and got to check them out. He put a reese hitch on the deuce and pulls his camper with it. His family farms and they use both trucks a lot on the farm, but the 2.5 ton is his favorite.

Wrong, you're thinking of a M35 carrying a shelter box. The M109A3 Box is larger and bolted down to the frame in the same way as the M35 cargo bed.

Whatever weight you end up toting around avoid rears if at all possible. We had several old powerwagon fire rigs we ran on the beach and the dual tire ones absolutly sucked in soft sandy conditions.

A friend has the one in the first picture. He thinks its a great truck. The only problem is that ohio just changed the law regarding them. You know have to have a commercial drivers license to operate one. This maybe something you should look into. Up until last moth this was not a problem in ohio. You may want to make sure they aren't gonna do that where you live.

I Have Both! : )
I have both a M35a2 and an M109a3. i love both of them. My M35a2 is a 1970 and has a LDT465 with a D Turbo, it wieghs 13400 lbs. My M109a3 is a 1972 and has a LDT465 non-turbo, it weighs 15940 lbs. In Texas you do not need a CDL to drive a vehical with a total gross weight of 26500 lbs, which neither of mine do. yo do need a CDL for a 5 ton truck. Insurance is not bad and as far as it getting away and leveling the block at 55 MPH with the petal to the floor in 5th on the highway going down a bridge, you have plenty of time to get it back. I am not a big fan of the turbo, it does not give you any more MPH, maybe a little less smoke. However, as not to mess it up yo have to let the moter idle for 5 minutes upon startup and let it idle for 5 minutes before turning it off. new turbo 400-500$$$$$. My M109a3 i get in start it up and wen the air pressure get enough for brakes, off i go and when i pull up at wal-mart or a resturant (or anywhere else i chose to drive) i just turn it off. I have my M109a3 (IKE) for a hurricane evac truck (BOV). I have my M35a2 (Allison) because i got a great deal, and she is pretty. As far as unstable my M109a3 I have no problem at all with the box, and yes it is mounted to the frame. There is a loop to get up on the highway overpass, that I go over daily and I can take it at 45 MPH with no problem (because it is going up hill) if it was going down I might make 50 MPH. I drove Ike from Texarkana to Port Arthur, TX. and Allison from Brunswick, GA to Port Arthur, TX (19.5 hours of A$$ numbing fun, get one with a spring or air ride seat, not a box type storage seat, pay extra if you have to). If yo have any other questions post them.

M35A2 is updated with the cat engine, allison auto trans, single wheels and most have very few miles. They also have the CTIS system. I wouldn't even consider a 109.
I wish I had 5 to 10k so I could buy one at the auctions. 30 of them sold in the last 3 months.

That's the M35A3. From what I hear about them, the CAT engines are a maintenance nightmare and the CTIS is a monumental fail that will sometimes work but usually just lets the tires air down.
I finally got my A2 in August and am getting ready to put her on the road. She's a whistler with winch, I was hoping to have it ready by Veterans Day but things have gone slowly. Total cost so far including transport from the DRMO location is less than $3K.
ETA: If you are seriously considering one of these, then go on over to SteelSoldiers.com and do some research. The guys are helpful and they are the most knowledgeable people around when it comes to military vehicles.

aren't those MPG figures(10-12MPG for the M35) in the first post wildly optimistic?
