Lightning (how safe is a TJ in a lightning storm)

Not really tech so move as needed...

But how safe is a TJ with a soft top in a lighting storm? Driving back from work today in the middle of this outragous storm I got to thinking...

There was lightening hitting all around us (one of the loudest things I have ever heard) and I had no clue what would happen if the Jeep got hit

From what i have heard in the past a car is one of the safest places you can be. The rubber from the tires will insulate most of the shock and hardly any will be felt by you. This is just what i have read when i had to do a report on lighning ...

My guess would be that it would go thru the roll bar and to the ground like a normal car. Personally I don't worry about it. Seriously, what's the odds?

The rubber on the tires doesn't have a thing to do with it.

Rubber has no effect.

Lets see the lightning just jumped across 5 miles of open air to hit your heep, no matter how big the tire, the lightning won't care. You are safe in the heep, the frame and roll bars will give the charge a place to go that has much less resistance than your body then it will jump to the ground which is where it really wants to be anyway. Electricity and water are both powerful and lazy, they always take the path of least resistance. Inside any car is a very safe place to be in a lightning storm.

so all those hundreds of thousands of volts jump through the air (an excelent insulator of electricity) and you think the puny tires are going to insulate the jeep from the electrical current?

well im sorry to say that they will just force the lightning to jump from the frame to the ground.

either way was long as the current doesnt pass through your body you should be fine. its only when it does pass through your body does your heart and other organs become affected

Actually, tires are not made of 100% rubber. Materials are added that, among other things, allow the tires to conduct electricity. This is done to prevent the buildup of a charge on the vehicle body that would possible discharge while re-fueling. A bad thing.
BTW, that's why you should always set your gasoline can (plastic or metal) on the ground when refilling it.
RE the original question, lighting almost never stikes vehicles. As mentioned above, current takes the path of least resistance, which will usually be the ground wire on nearby utility poles, light poles, antenna towers, water towers, and tall, wet trees.

Vehicle becomes a 'Faraday Cage' (an enclosure formed by conducting material, or by a mesh of such material. Such an enclosure blocks out external static electrical fields) when lightning or downed power lines hit it. Just stay in the vehicle.

Here's a clip

NOT SPECIFIC TO VWs.

Tell that to one of my friends.

There's still a scorch mark in the ground on that soccer field. I'll never forget that day.

since lightning travels from the ground up most of it is absorbed by your tires.
