Jeepers who Kayak

Hey y'all, i'm really considering getting into kayaking...I live in the blue ridge mtns of north carolina, and it'd be a shame if I didn't get into it. I was curious how many jeepers out there do kayaking down streams/creeks/rivers, especially if u live in NC but it doesn't matter. I'd also like to do some camping while kayaking, I suppose it's done al of the time and I don' treally now how hard it is. Maybe some suggestions of a kayak, accessories, stories...anything! Just want to hear some info! Thanks y'all

when I was in the scouts I did two 50 'miler canoe trips. I've done alot of white water canoeing, and my dad and my brother built two Pygmy sea kayaks (we lived in washington at the time). I never really got into kayaking that much. I really like going out in the ocean and surfing the big swells in a storm, but if I had my choice I'd take my canoe to a nice quiet sunny lake, throw a line in the water, and take a nice long nap. Where's summer?

I have been getting into kayaking more and more. I was looking into getting a kayak last summer, but I didn't get one. I ususally rent them and get dropped off up stream only to kayak several miles down stream. My last trip I was able to load the kayak up with camping gear and do a two day adventure. It was the best so far. This summer I would like to try kayaking at least once a month if possible.

As for the camping gear, I have a MSR zoid 2 tent. It's 4 lbs with everything making it small and compact. I have a msr whisper lite hiking stove and a complete set of cooking pots. I usually bring the bigger pot and a frying pan. The stove fits in the bigger pot saving some space. I have a couple of dry bags. One is for all the camping gear. I take another dry bag for clothing and other things. I tend to get dry bags with the air valves, so it allows me to make the compact enough putting each one in the front and rear of the kayak. If you really want a good night sleep spend the money and invest in a set of dry bags. My first camping/ canoeing trip. The boat flipped and everything got wet. It wasn't bad since it was the first time, but now I know better.
As for the ice chess, I have a couple small lunch ones that are about a foot by foot by several inches hight. I put all the food in one and the drinks in the other. I usually go with other people, so I would have once chess and the other person would have the other one in their kayak. They are small enough if you need to fit both of them in your boat. I would also freeze a few bottles of drinks and toss them in the boat.

I just got into kayaking last spring and got my Jeep in September. It doesn't work as a shuttle, but it's great when you just want to toss in your gear and go! Only problem I had was loading my boat into it when it was raining, boat skipped over the front seat and shattered my windshield. Visit: www.boatertalk.com and you'll find lots of people to paddle with, a gear swap, and other stuff. Also, search the internet for some local paddling clubs. I paddle the Chattooga Sec. III mostly, Nantahala, and Cartecay. I don't creek or play boat. SYOTR!

I canoe and kayak. Even spent a few summers as a whitewater rafting guide on a couple of different rivers. Until I bought the Jeep I had a pickup truck with a huge rack on it that would hold 3 boats. With the Jeep I didn't want to have to put a rack on it...for one I would need a ladder to reach up and tie down the boats. So I put a rack that I made out of angle iron on a small trailer, now that holds 4 or more boats and tons of gear. Trailer is the way to go. I agree about finding a club near you. They'll help you decide what gear and boat you need, as well as, any safety courses you need to take. Also kayaking by yourself is a no no, with a club you'll always have some cool people that know of cool places to go. Good luck!

whitewater and touring canoe man here. In Arkansas, we have some great white water rivers, they're seasonal though. This is my time of year, every weekend I'm playing, or if it rains during the week I'm sick and can't go to work those days, my boss is fairly understanding. Tried the yak thing, sitting in that position didn't please my back and lower legs.

In your part of the country, you should look into the Pigeon, the Nantahala, and Ocoee (extremely seasonal and violent).
