The Jeep they should have built!

I was reading the thread on this website about signing a petition to bring back the Cherokee and after I signed it I was reading through some of the comments and someone mentioned a Jeep Dakar which sounded very cool. I did a search and came up with this: http://www.allpar.com/model/jeep/dakar-icon.html which is realllllly cool! It's kind of a cross between a Wrangler and a Cherokee... the best of both worlds.

I thought that's the concept that eventually became the Liberty? Lost a little in the translation, though.

That thing is so unLibertylike it's not even funny. That Dakar was made for some serious off-roading. Came with the winch, built in shovels, the jerry cans... etc etc... NONE of which the Liberty has.

Would you like a list of currently produced 4x4's that had all those accessories in prototype phase? The dakar was one of the original liberty concepts, combined with the icon. I think it's a neat concept, but I'd much rather have an XJ then a dakar..the dakar has almost all the space limitations of the TJ with the groundclearence of a libby.

The Dakar is SOOO much cooler than than the libby. Jeep made a big mistake for not building this one, they'd have sold tons. I think its better than the unlimited also and they could have made it a soft top.

i like the cherokee the way it is, and besides, its actually pretty cool having them build such a capable offroader, but not including any winches or anything. it makes it so that we are able to modify the jeep in the way we want, let us have fun

I love when these threads come up the group always has mixed emotions. I say it is better looking than a liberty.

Ditto. Still, I'd take my XJ (even stock) any day over that; winches and shovels or not...

The problem with this concept was that the general public demands ride comfort, thus the independant front suspension that the liberty and gc get. If people want the original jeep experience then they buy the classic style jeep, the TJ with the solid axles and SWB.

IFS sucks. While it works and rides nice, I feel that the straight axle rules offroad...

Unless you're talking Baja runners; then it's a totally different argument.

I dunno, I personally like the feel of a solid axle on the road...steering always feels more planted. Of course, I feel much more in control on snow/ice in a RWD vehicle then FWD, so maybe I'm just from the old school.

This is a better angle. The Dakar, being a stretched Wrangler with 4drs would have been an excellent Cherokee replacement. Much better than the Liberty, and at least as capable as an XJ with the solid axles and such. I think the strong sales of the current TJ Unlimited shows this would have been successful.

Add on the Rubicon package...
