I have a German friend who has a 1978 CJ-7. We are trying to get it running for him, but it will not start without assistance (spraying directly into the carburator) when it is cold. any one have any ideas,,,,carb problem, pump problem? where do we look first?
A lot of these older units also have an inline gas filter! You should also replace that!
Using a fuel additive to remove water from the gas tank might help!
I use Sea foam motor treatment, dis chit works MIRACLES.
16 fluid OZ. Half in the tank and half in the oil.
Hot restart is a problem. Cold start problems are choke or fuel delivery. On a CJ with a carb it really does not get easier. Filters? Fuel Pump? But honestly if it starts with ether... which is really bad stupid thing to do. It must be fuel supply/restriction or most likely... lack of choke.
Big question?? Carbs are old school. Like you need to be 60 years old to love them. Are you guys at all familiar with them?

Insure the choke plate is completely closed when cold
With the engine off, stroke the throttle and look down the throat. You should see a nice long squirt of fuel for each barrel. A dribble or nothing is an accelerator pump issue.
BTW, a bit of information on the engine and carb we are working with would help...
