Because Hyundai has, in ten years, gone from a rival to Daewoo for the title of "worst car on the road" to "can compete with Mercedes." They simply know how to do business. Personally, I'd rather see Nissan buy Chrysler, as they have something we want - small cars, and we have something they want - big trucks, but to see it NOT get bought by GM is the best thing, as GM's plans for Chrysler included liquidating Dodge and Chrysler, and using or selling Jeep, as it's the only profitable line in Chrysler's lineup right now. Also, Cerberus couldn't care less about the Chrysler lines, as long as they're making money. Hyundai or Nissan would care about keeping Dodge, because there will always be a need for work trucks.

Hyundai's are great reliable cars that are cheap. The more recently made Jeeps are lacking in reliability from what i've read here, so maybe Hyundai could help with that.

Land Rover owners had the same feeling, first when Ford bought them and then with the sale to Tata. You just have to get used to the idea. This economy sucks so bad right now that these kinds of things are going to continue to happen.

As has already been stated, at least GM isn't going to be buying them.

I realize that Cerberus doesn't want to sell off Chrysler in pieces, but a bankruptcy judge will probably end up doing so anyway. Might as well sell Jeep...

I still remember Hyundai as selling junk cars, but they are coming along.

So if they buy Jeep, is it just the brand their buying? I don't know who would want to buy anything associated with the UAW? I would think they would take the brand and run.

Hyundai is making really nice vehicles right now. If the keep the Jeep Full frame and solid axles it should be ok.

Also Land Rover was sold to BMW, then Ford, now Tata.

I doubt they'd do squat to the line, really. It looks like they've got the same interest Ford had in Land Rover and Volvo-expanding into an area without having to spend the R&D and production capital. If they buy Jeep, they have on their hands some of the only profitable SUVs left on the market today, and the Wrangler, which is one of the best-selling, popular vehicles of all time.

And I agree, Hyundai has really stepped it up as of late. For the longest time, they were just a 'poor man's Honda', but now I'd say they're almost as good, and definitely as good as Toyota is, and for a cheaper price too. Definitely better then anything the American brands can produce in that area, at least.

On a side-note, I kinda like how this Chrysler division is looking. The profitable brands are being kept-Dodge Trucks, Jeeps and Minivans-and the crap is going to dissapear. Plus, this is a great opportunity for Hyundai, Volkswagen and Nissan-3 excellent automakers who really need better penetration into North American markets-to a foothold with proven popular vehicles. I doubt that the jobs on the other lines will be lost, because the slack from Chrysler will have to be picked up somewhere so all of those plants will likely be bought up and converted to make vehicles that, you know, don't suck a fat one.

Who cares who owns Jeep, any time something breaks on mine I replace it with something made by someone else anyway.

good point, all the "best built" jeeps end up with ford, chevy, yota, dodge, and aftermarket parts while all the jeep parts break/disappear.

Not so fast.

“We have no interest whatsoever in acquiring Chrysler, including Jeep and have not engaged in any discussions with Cerberus on this matter,” Jake Jang, a Hyundai spokesman, told Reuters. “Our hands are full now.”

Especially by a country that's in civil unrest and split in two.

It's not true (thank god.)

Quote:
Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea’s largest automaker, denies media reports that it is in talks with Cerberus Capital Management about purchasing Chrysler’s Jeep Division.

“We have no interest whatsoever in acquiring Chrysler, including Jeep and have not engaged in any discussions with Cerberus on this matter,” Jake Jang, a Hyundai spokesman, told Reuters. “Our hands are full now.”

The company added that its resources are focused on its own expansion, including a new plant in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Since General Motors announced it was shelving plans for a “strategic acquisition” on Friday, sources say Cerberus has been exploring options for mergers or sales of Chrysler’s automotive operations. These may include reopening negotiations with the Renault-Nissan alliance, though this option would not bring any cash to the table.
