Interesting Facts about Jeeps

Thought we could use something educational here.

Post one interesting thing about Jeeps.

The first three major prototype companies to produce a military capable vehicle (Jeep) was Bantom, Ford, and Willys.

Phantom died out and it was just Willys and Ford that worked together to produce all Jeeps for the military in WWII

OK, I will take first crack...
Jeep... the word ...came from an acronym used for the vehicle's use called General Purpose which eventually was reduced to GP and pronounced JeeP and then the word itself, hence "Jeep"

in other countries and nations the globe over, the term "Jeep" is used as a general reference to any 4WD vehicle designed for offroad use to some extent.

the other half is from the Popeye cartoon strip. No one knows 100% which on is correct.

It was announced to the public as Jeep because that is what a lot of the military soliders were calling it on the base.

Fact: Sears used to sale Jeep parts! my wife went to an estate sale and found me a Sears catalog from 1973-1974 of replacement parts for Jeep's and Jeepsters. How cool is that to have!! And it's in near perfect shape!

it was rumored that Popeye's Eugene the Jeep character was named that because he was little and could do anything. But since Bantam did not produce the first prototype until 4 years after the introduction of the character it is more likely that it was the other way around.
Now where did the term "Hummer" come from?

Willys was originally pronounced like Willis with a short I.

Bantom did not get the contract to build Jeeps because the Army did not believe they could build the numbers that both Ford and Willy's could. Bantom sued and lost the copyright suit they filed. Bantom ended up building the 1/4ton trailers. The term "jeep" had been used by military as any new recruit or untested vehicle. While testing the protypes some GI's even called them "Peeps". Some think it was for the GP that Ford had termed it, but G stands for Gov't contract and P was for 80" wheel base. No one is 100% sure how the name came to be.
