Intel Chipset display problems

Ok, I am using a lenovo thinkpad laptop with at mobile Intel 965 chip set. Its a great laptop, except once in a while (like every other day) the display slowly fades to black and then snaps back on at full brightness. Anyone with computer experience know what might be causing this?

Bad backlight, bad inverter, or flakey video cable would be my guess.

plug a computer monitor into the laptop and route the display to that instead. If it doesn't do it then chances are it's the backlight or the inverter for the screen. Inverter is prolly going to be cheap, backlight wont be, since it's considered part of the screen.

Edit: Bah, would have been first if I didn't correct the spelling.
