I'd put "The Levellers" pretty much at the top of that list

Did you want music by hippies or for hippies?

Velvet Underground? Not particularly crazy about them.

My mom used to listen to the Mamas and the Papas, and the Grateful Dead (I think they're about as hippie as you can get). She also used to like Credence Clearwater Revival. Oh, there's also Joan Baez and Peter, Paul and Mary

I prefer alternative myself

I don't think CCR is hippie music. They were always popular with blue-collar workers, since that's the image they projected. They did have the song Fortunate Son that was about how rich kids don't have to go fight in Vietnam. One of my favorite bands.

sorry-my mom always considered herself a "free spirit", so I naturally equated anything she regularly listened to as hippie like. I guess you're right about CCR.

Mama's & Papa's already mentioned...but

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itchycoo_Park

If you ain't heard that, you ain't heard hippie .

Also

San Francisco Nights by the Animals.

Also

ANYTHING by Donovan

And THE hippie song by Scott McKenzie, San Francisco (Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair).

And, being nearly as old as Jerry B. () I can attest to the fact that if you can remember the sixties, you weren't really there.

Detroit, 1967...whoooooweeeeeeeeee......

PP&M????

C'mon youngblood, no way a self respecting hippie would lay out $1.25 for a ticket. That would be like going to listen to the Weavers .

M&P's, O.K., I'll buy that, but CCR? Nah. Musical yes, hippiedom, no .

Joan Baez...hmmm....folk, yes, protest, absotively...but hippie love???...no, sorry, she's Bob Dylan in drag....

Jerry Garcia was really sumpthin' tho...I dunno 'bout hippie...those cats were a power unto themselves, like Joplin (Janis, not Scott ).

I envy you...I don't have an alternative self...

Geez, ya'll makin' the fat boy feel old tonight. Where the heck is Jerry B?
