I will never complain about building inspectors again!

I'm turning my downstairs into a Father-In-Law's suite and making it limited mobility friendly (I don't have room for a full blown ADA compliance)
This is what I found when I pulled the plaster off the ceiling. Good thing 15 years ago I retiled and put in wonderboard. If the floor had a leak and got rot I would have really taken a dump...into the downstairs bathroom.
I guess the plumber came in and figures a 2x10 was only there for looks and it wouldn't matter if he trimmed it a bit.

This house was built around the same time I was and they weren't following any building codes then.

Reminds me of our old 1945 house we sold
last year...

When we do right, no one remembers. When we do wrong, no one forgets.

Run a 2x10 between the two parallel joists, secure the end of the cut off one to it. Then run another from the new cross piece to the double sill plate of the wall. ...good as new!

It took me a while to see what the problem was.

When I eventually found it I actually said aloud "Holy ****!"

When we finally replaced the rotted floor of our cabin, some of the spots were so bad, the only thing keeping someone from going through the floor was the amount of furniture holding the carpet in place.

It's not an addiction. It's a way of life.

Right? I thought it was the top sill plate that is cracked where the vertical pipe goes through.
