I will never complain about building inspectors again!

I'm turning my downstairs into a Father-In-Law's suite and making it limited mobility friendly (I don't have room for a full blown ADA compliance)
This is what I found when I pulled the plaster off the ceiling. Good thing 15 years ago I retiled and put in wonderboard. If the floor had a leak and got rot I would have really taken a dump...into the downstairs bathroom.
I guess the plumber came in and figures a 2x10 was only there for looks and it wouldn't matter if he trimmed it a bit.

This house was built around the same time I was and they weren't following any building codes then.

Run a 2x10 between the two parallel joists, secure the end of the cut off one to it. Then run another from the new cross piece to the double sill plate of the wall. ...good as new!

It took me a while to see what the problem was.

When I eventually found it I actually said aloud "Holy ****!"

When we finally replaced the rotted floor of our cabin, some of the spots were so bad, the only thing keeping someone from going through the floor was the amount of furniture holding the carpet in place.

It's not an addiction. It's a way of life.

Right? I thought it was the top sill plate that is cracked where the vertical pipe goes through.

Actually that's the proper way of doing it when you need to have an opening between floor joists. More than 4ft you need a double header, less than 4ft a single will work.
3 joist hangers a 32 inch board to match your floor joists and you're good. (over 30 years building experience)

I still hate doing tile! Last thing I did was my back splash.

Don't call him an idiot man, tell him how to correct his error. Be better than that.
reflex1 and puppybreath like this.

It's simply useless to argue on the interwebs. It's akin to arguing with a toddler. Doing so only makes you look silly and they always poop their pants.
