The list of reasons would be long, but usually revolve around them not stocking a commonly used item that I happen to need, but here's todays entry. I'm almost done with my lift but turns out I'm 4 bolts short. The only places in town that are open today have them for roughly $6/bolt which is more than i care to spend. So as a last ditch effort short of waiting until Monday when fastenal ($1.60 each) opens up is a call to HD clear across town.
HD Hi this is Scott
ME Hi Scott I'm looking for some bolts, can you check and see if you have the size I need?
HD Sure, what size
ME They're metric, I need M12, thread pitch doesn't matter, but 100mm long.
HD 100mm? That would be over a yard long.
ME It should be about 4 inches
HD Oh, you mean cm.
Me Ya, my mistake, I mean 100cm.
Rummaging sound for a few minutes,
HD Yeah, we've got them.
ME They're 100 long?
HD Yeah.
ME How much are they?
HD $1.37 each.
ME Great, I'll be there in about 15 minutes.
Driving sounds commence...
So HD of course doesn't have the right length, longest they have is 80mm. I find Scott, who looks in the same drawer I was just in and obviously can't find them. I tell him I just talked to him 10 minutes ago, you looked, told me not only that you had them but what they cost.
HD It wasn't me on the phone, I don't know who it was.
ME Ok, who's been answering the phone in this dept. for the last 15 minutes?
HD Oh, I've got the phone (shows me the phone) but it wasn't me that answered it.
For all of 15 minutes they redeemed themselves for all the wasted trips I'd spent in the past. Now they're back on my list of places I hope burns to the ground some day.

Yea. I work for Home Depot and we never have anything in stock. I work in Paint and the biggest thing we run out of and never get is the cleaning solvents like acetone, mineral spirits, paint thinner, turpentine, etc. We will get a shipment in and it fills the shelves. Literally less than a week later its all gone. Then we wont get another shipment for about a month. Besides the good pay and the hott chick that works in kitchens I wouldnt like it very much.

LOL.... I was the DH in Paints when I worked there and I know what you're talking about- the problem there is WM Barr has a high weight or dollar minimum on their orders before they'll send them. That's why the orders come in nice and robust but don't last long- nobody wants pallets of flammable/explosive goods being jockied around by forklifts 12-16 feet in the air over their heads...
It's definitely a different company nowadays- they really started skimping on properly training people and getting enough of them to begin with...

for the most part i go to Lowes, but a few weeks ago (with snow still on the ground) i needed a wheel barrow. went to Lowes and they pretty much said 'yea, we've got some, they're outside, BUT you can't buy one because we would have to go out there and get it'. now THAT'S lame! so i went to HD and the guy there said 'yea, follow me' and took me outside and showed me a couple different ones. i told him which one i wanted and i went to the cashier to pay for it and he loaded it up and took it to my Jeep. couldn't ask for better service.
just my opinion, it wasn't so much HD not being helpful, it was just Scott being the ******!

My DH is a complete retard. Our store is brand new just opened in Nov. 07. She has to be the biggest suck up. I know thats how you climb the ladder but shes dumb. She is always tellin us no cell phones on the floor. No lie two seconds later she is calling someone on hers. She keeps telling me and Ive never had mine out there. Oh and I work with a 40 somthing lesbian that stands 5ft flat maybe. Shes a ***** too.

My HD is alright. I don't go for specialty things normally, just generic stuff. If I want specialty, we have a local Do-It Best Hardware store that stocks basically everything.
However, this brings up one thing I hate about working on vehicles...parts places close at noon on Saturday and don't reopen until Monday at 8am. They could make a killing if they were open on weekends - that's when people do all their work. And sadly, I can't accurately predict what bolts will snap so I can order them ahead of time.

I work at home depot and I will be the first to say that the company is horrible. for those of you that said you were DH's: what is wrong with you? they couldnt pay me enough to do that job. all the responsibilities and duties of a manager, but with no pay increase? HA! my ASM talked to me about being a dh i told him no thanks. i currently work in lumber. last summer i hurt my arms moving all the heavy **** we sell. i went to the doctor, on company time. it was a work injury 100%. I got a ****ing bill last week for $175 from the ER doctor that said HD insurance never responded. they were in a bind last week and asked me to drive 52 miles each way to do a garden reset. I said ok, since id be getting mileage paid. I get my paycheck friday and guess what, i wasnt paid for mileage. Its getting ridiculous. Im tryin to find another job.
For those of you that shop at HD yet complain: stop going. There are other hardware stores out there. The main reason I hear why people still go to HD rather than lowes is because HD is cheaper. so what. pay the higher price. hit HD in the only thing they care about. I want to tell every whining *****y customer that walks through those doors this. We dont care if you shop at HD. Be our guest and go to lowes. because i will tell you this: at least at my store, the majority of the associates truly work hard and try to help the customers as much as they can. its just that there are so few associates working that we cant be everywhere at once. when people have to wait they get mad. when they get mad they tend to make everyone miserable around them. deal with mad customers for 8 hours everyday and youll be miserable and wont give a damn about the job. last summer i was stuck countless times in lumber and millwork by myself, on sunny 80 degree weekend days. by the time i got off work i was so worn out and in such a bad mood from dealing with the customers all day that it made me and everyone around me miserable. not a good thing.
i hear it used to be a good company. doesnt seem like it is now. dont be so hard on the HD associate that is trying to help you (if you find one )Chances are theyve had a long day dealing with customers and i know that at my store a little patience on your part will go a long way.

1- I asked myself that same question thousands of times!
2- They didn't pay me enough to do it either.
3- I actually got a whole dollar an hour raise to take the job!!! It doesn't seem like much now, but after being beaten down with 10 to 25 cent an hour raises only once a year, some years you didn't even get that- that whole dollar seemed like a real step up... if only I knew then what I know now...

We have a HD across the street from a Lowes...but the HD was there first. So you really can't loose.
