I couldn't shoot a dog that I hated. Well, unless it was attacking me or someone else. We had to give my boy the shot a year ago.
Thanks now I'm sad.

If the dog is suffering the trip to the vet may only increase its pain. I have never had to put a dog down, they seem to wander off when the time comes. I have had to put a calf down. I didn't have a sentimental attachment to the calf just a financial one, still sucked. I would

The change will effect the dog, though it has problems it will know something's wrong when you bring him to the vet. It may be hard for you and most, but it would make it easy for me knowing the dog would be comfortable and not in question when it dies. Humane

uh, no.
Wouldn't, couldn't do it to my daughter; wouldn't do it to my dog.

i worked at a vet for 6 years. We never rammed a needle into the heart of anything to euthenize it, and never would even consider it if the owner wanted to be present. If a vein blew out (and sometimes they did) we just chose another vein. There's at least one good one in each leg. If the dog had poor circulation or was just too squirmy we'd inject a sedative into a muscle first.

If you are off by just a little it s now dieing in immense and intense pain and scared and confused as to why someone it loved is doing this to it. Even if its a semi auto and only takes a second or two that is a second or two to long for my dog to have to go through that. I will euthanize mine by lethal injection every time that way I can comfort my dog while he passes and his suffering is ended. Then I will probably ball like a little baby for who knows how long. I will feel like I am losing my child when that time comes. But to each their own. You should do what you feel is right it doesn't matter what others think only what you think. No matter what way you choose though just make sure pain and suffering for the dog is none if possible or as little as possible if not. Your opinion is the only one that should matter since your the one that has to live with said decision.

My ol' girl couldn't walk anymore but was still as happy as can be. I took her to the vet, with her in my lap giving her as much love as I could(GF was driving). I didn't hear a peep when the put the iv in and she just laid there eating treats. The vet assured me, with watery eyes, that she wouldn't feel a thing. I held her until it was over. Buried her in the back yard and I say hi to her everyday. I cried like a damn 5'10" 215lb baby the whole time. I'm all watery right now too. Losing a best friend hurts like hell and I could never end their life myself unless I ultimately had to.

That made me sad
I put Bouvier/Black Lab mix, she was a big girl, down about 10 years ago after she had a stroke and couldn't hold herself up to go to the bathroom. The day she was to be put down I told my mom I couldn't stand being there when it happened (still living at home) so be sure she was out of the house by the time I got home from work.
That day I had an appointment to get the lugs on my car replaced, and the animal hospital was across the street. It was a beautiful sunny, summer day. At about 3:30 I'm waitng for the car to be finished when all of a sudden, it clouds over and POURS for about 2 minutes, stops, clouds move out and the sun was beaming again.
I got home and saw that my mom had layed her collar and "death certificate" on my bed. I started to well up a bit and then I read what time she was injected, and balled like a baby.
Her collar has been around every steering column of every car since then but the Jeep. I'm too terrified someone will steal it for some reason.
Anyways, I couldn't have shot her or any other dog of mine.
To have her giving me any kind of look, probably a sad one, would just break my heart. I couldn't even fathom the chance of having the top of her head flying off from MY bullet.
No way.
Good god....I even euthanise my sick fish! I'm a wuss

When I was 13, we had to put down a dog that I had known literally ALL of my life. That dog loved to dig, and it seemed like he knew it was time because one day, he dug a big hole, and never climbed back out. We shot him, because he was in obvious pain and didn't want him to suffer any longer. It hurt me way more than it hurt him. I guess I'm old school, but it just seemed right, and I'd do it again if it came down to it.

I have had to put my own dog down before after being hit by a car. He was in great pain and probly would not have made the trip to the vet, I have had others euthanized them to. For them it was more humane for them and to hard for me to shot them.

we have had to put down two horses. 1st was my wifes she had it since she was a little girl. Got the trackhoe dug a big hole threw some carrots in there he went down there and 2 well placed shots with a .17 pistol and the horse was done. covered it up and drunk a few beers. I had no attachment to the horse because every time I rode it it never listened to me. My wife however was pretty upset. I assured her it was his time to go (the damn horse was like 30 years old). Anyone wondering why 2 shots, its becuase a horse is a huge animal it was dead after the 1st one but put another one into it just to be sure. Best way to kill a horse is to pet its head and take the bridle off, hold the ear back and place the shot right between the ear and eye. Not between the eyes because they have pretty hard skulls.
The 2nd one was a little tougher. It was my wifes sisters horse. Not planned at all. Horse was running in the field with the goats and a horn caught it under the rear leg. Hit an artery and it was pouring blood out. No way to stop it. The nearest vet was an hour away. I told my FIL he was going to have to put it down. He could not do.We had to tie her legs together when she fell because she was kicking so bad. Tied the legs to the back of the neck and my wifes uncle came down and shot her with a .44. Neither time was there much to clean up.
Could I do it to a dog? easily you can hate on me all you want but I dont consider animals part of the family. They are there to serve a purpose, whether that be pleasure for my son, protection, or to herd. You people saying its like putting down a kid are insane. I have a 4 year old and have been around animals all my life there are no similarities. Would I be upset about having to kill a dog? Maybe for a few minutes, would it screw up my day? No way. We had to put down my 2 retrievers when I was about 14. Had them ever since I could remember. I thought I would be upset about it. It was pretty easy. I guess I have just never thought of animals as family members. I loved both of those dogs but not like my family.

It was a .22 Magnum pistol. My hand was on the back of their necks, there would be no sudden moves or squirming, and the muzzle was maybe half an inch from their heads -- no missing. I wasn't going to chance it.

Well, that's NOT the way they did it, and they did warn me beforehand that if they had a blowout, that's what they would have to do. The way you describe to do it is much better.
To be honest, though, even with my bad experiences at the vet, I do take my dogs there to have it done. I DO feel better hugging them (and controlling their heads -- no muzzles) in their last moments than holding them down. The two I shot were only because they were suffering horribly and none of the vets would come to their office to do the deed.

I've come to the conclusion that I would do it if they bit anyone for whatever reason. I know the chance of that is small, but still there none-the-less. I don't think I could stand sitting there waiting for an appointment to kill my dog that's in overall good health. If they're old and it's their time, then I'll take them to the vet unless they are suffering horribly.
And of course a I write this, an animal rescue and welfare commercial comes on.

I personally think a lot of people here are suffering from internet-nards. Probably never loaded a gun, let alone have the stomach to pull the trigger on anything. Just saying, if the animal was suffering and there was no other option, then so be it....have to do it. But to say that it means nothing to you and brag " and I do it again too! " is just ignorant. I've had to put down my horse, a goat and my neighbors dog (got hit by a car) and several smaller animals, pet rabbits and stuff, but would never brag that " it meant nothing to me". IDK
